Great Book
By Alan Dale Daniel
The Invisible Gorilla is an unusual name for an unusual book. The authors Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons have assembled a evidence of six illusions that impact our lives in significant ways. Chapter One deals with the illusion of attention, that is, the illusion that we see or observe far more than we think. Several experiments have proven that even obvious things are easily missed by people. Up to fifty percent of testers failed to see a fake gorilla enter a basketball game where the testers were counting the number of ball passes rather than looking for gorillas. It is from this experiment that the book gets its name.

Most think that such a gorilla would be easily noticed; however, various experiments have shown this is not the case. This lack of ability to see objects that are not expected may explain why cars pull out in front of motorcycles, as it is theorized that people driving cars do not expect to see motorcycles and thus they do not. Cell phone users also miss obvious objects while they are driving. It seems cell phone users that are driving suffer from a reduction in awareness, but they are not aware of it. Thus the illusion that they are as fully aware while talking on the phone as they are when the phone is not in use. The Invisible Gorilla points out how this attention illusion can have real and sometimes harsh results in the real world.

Then the book goes on to describe five other illusions: the illusion of memory, the illusion of knowledge and confidence, the illusion that in a series of events, event one causes event two, and the illusion that certain mythical processes - such as hypnotism - can help one reach their full potential. Another illusion is we can do many things well all at once (multi-tasking); however, experiments have shown this is a false assumption.

The book's key message is that we think our mental abilities and capacities are greater than they really are. Perhaps the largest impact is in court, where witnesses think they can accurately remember an event that occurred some time ago.

I loved this book. It explains so many problems faced in a modern world where information as well as objects are hurled into our lives at breathtaking speed. What is most important is that we stop assuming our minds can process all this whirl without problems. More experiments are necessary to evaluate how our minds work. Understanding our limitations is important to achieving our full potential.

There is How We Think We Are and Then There is How We Are!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Lately, there has been a plethora of books trying to popularize the more interesting and counter-intuitive results from fields like behavioral psychology. All of those books, as far as I'm aware, mention a particularly famous study where participants are asked to view a video of basketball players and asked to count the number of passes. As odd as it sounds, about half of the participants fail to notice the "invisible gorilla" - a man dressed like a gorilla strolling from one side of the court to the other.

These two authors are the inventors of that and subsequent experiments. In other words, these authors are very knowledgeable about their field because, in a sense, they invented one of its primary experiments.

What is their focus in this book? Well, it is not so much that people didn't notice the "invisible gorilla" that surprised them, but the adamance with which participants denied that they could have missed something so obvious. Many disbelieved that there was actually a gorilla in the tape they were shown, accusing he researchers of playing a trick on them. So, the authors' mission in this book is to explore the human tendency toward overconfidence in their abilities.

Each chapter focuses on a different "illusion" that comes from the human tendency to (very subconsciously) overestimate our ability. They are as follows:

Chapter 1 - Illusion of Attention, or, the belief that we are attentive to much more than we actually are at any given moment.
Chapter 2 - Illusion of Memory, or, the illusion that our memories are much more exact than they are.
Chapter 3 - Illusion of Confidence, or, the illusion that confidence (in others) is a good sign of competence.
Chapter 4 - Illusion of Knowledge, or, the illusion that we have detailed knowledge about many things that, in fact, we only have vague knowledge of.
Chapter 5 - Illusion of Cause, or, the illusion that two things happening sequentially necessarily signifies scause/effect relationship.
Chapter 6 - Illusion of Potential, or, the illusion that in every human, there is a vast array of untapped potential waiting to come out (if only we learn to use more of our brains, listen to Mozart, "train our brains" etc.)

The thing is that while this book is a very interesting and well-written one for casual reading, each of these illusions has very potentially serious consequences. While the authors present studies and anecdotes in each chapter that illustrate each phenomenon, the message is very serious: if we are not careful to be somewhat aware of our tendency to overestimate our abilities, we could send the wrong person to prison (if we are a witness), spend too much time and money on the wrong things for our child's cognitive development (if we are a parent), or even cause an accident (if we are a texter-while-driving).

For instance, the authors spend a great deal of time in chapter 1 debunking the myth that is multitasking. In reality, study after study show that we can only multi task when (a) all but one of the things we are doing is completely routine, or (b) alternate our attention rapidly, but often ineffectively, between all the things we are doing. It is literally impossible to do two non-routine things well at the same time. And this leads to people thinking that they can text or talk on their cell while driving, when studies show that this leads to the exact same type of delayed reactions exhibited by drunk drivers. Once we text or talk, we can only drive well when nothing unexpected happens. Should a car dart in front of us, our reaction time will be about the same as the drunk driver.

Another example? Chapter 5 spends much time examining the disjunct between how scientific studies work to establish causal connections, and how the human brain does it. The latter often falls victim to seeing causal relationships in events that are simply sequential or correlational. Particularly, the media often tends to report a causal link between x and y when the scientific study only said that factors x and y were correlated (and the cause may be z or something more complex). We also tend, in our personal lives, to give more credence to anecdotes than statistics. Put these together, and it leads to a lot of wasted money and time chasing false leads (like trying to undo autism by not getting children vaccinated, or buying Baby Mozart CD's based on very flawed reports).

All in all, this book is not only interesting and entertaining to read, but has some very serious lessons to teach. One would think a book telling us that we are not often all that we think we are might imbue pessimism into its readers. This book really does the opposite: it shows us that by knowing where we are most likely to make mistakes in estimating our abilities, we actually INCREASE our competence (or, am I just succumbing to the illusion of confidence?).

Fascinating analysis of how our brains fool us
By jhl
No matter how carefully you think about what you're doing, no matter how realistic your view of the world seems to be, you're apparently fooling yourself. According to psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons, our brains are hardwired to edit our perceptions and memories, to misinterpret evidence and jump to conclusions. They outline a variety of illusions the human mind falls prey to, some of which make intuitive (uh-oh - the goal of the book is to prove the unreliability of intuition) sense, including the fact that our brains edit information coming from our senses (we can all understand that if we noticed everything happening around us we could pay attention to none of it) and overconfidence (surprise! People who don't know very much about a subject overestimate how much they understand - I have some colleagues I'd like to hand that chapter to). Others were more startling - that in general people tend to believe the first "evidence" of a fact they receive, especially when it's presented emotionally, and they resist later evidence to the contrary, no matter how convincing (so it's not just those idiots from the other end of the political spectrum who do that!).

The Invisible Gorilla presents a lot of illuminating information that is well worth reading - it's both interesting and enlightening. I guess popular psychology books are expected to propose a solution to the problems they outline, so the final chapter offers somewhat less compelling suggestions for avoiding your brain's false intuitions. While on the one hand I was glad to discover that I'm a normal human, not an inattentive dummy (which is what I feel like when I'm driving, and I don't even own a cell phone!), on the other I was sorry to learn that there's not a whole lot of hope for change, barring a life of hyper-vigilance.

I bought the original edition of this book and loved it so I was curious to see how it had evolved in this edition. It was well worth the investment to get the latest edition. Not only are the new features in SQL Server 2014 like In Memory optimization and clustered column store indexes lucidly explained but the original material on reading query plans, analyzing waits, setting server options, etc. has been rewritten and expanded. I got the Kindle edition which is more difficult to thumb through when you need to find something but much easier to take with me on airplanes. I highly recommend this - even if you already own a previous edition

A very good, wide-ranging , SQL code optimization book.

Hi,

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

A popular performance tuning book gets updated for SQL Server 2014, how does it fare?

This well-liked SQL Server book examines performance from various angles, but concentrates on improvements related to the SQL code itself. The book has been updated for SQL Server 2014, additionally various chapters have been restructured. The book is aimed at anyone responsible for SQL Server performance, especially DBAs and developers.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 SQL Query Performance Tuning
This chapter opens with a discussion of the performance tuning process steps i.e. identify bottlenecks, prioritize issues, troubleshoot issues, apply resolutions, quantify change, and repeat. The price of any performance improvement is examined in terms of targets and having a good-enough solution. The importance of having a baseline is introduced early, allowing you to determine if current processing is ‘normal’.

Performance problems can be due to a variety of causes, including problems with hardware, operating system, network, database design and SQL code. Most problems are due to poor SQL code. The author discusses the major performance killers in outline here, and expands on them in the remainder of the book. Problems examined include:
• Insufficient indexing
• Inaccurate statistics
• Improper query design
• Poorly generated execution plans
• Excessive blocking and deadlocks
• Non-set-based operations, usually T-SQL cursors
• Inappropriate database design
• Excessive fragmentation
In many ways this chapter is a summary of the rest of the book. It provides a good overview of the performance tuning process, including a helpful flowchart. There’s a useful overview of the major causes of bad performance, each of which is expanded upon in subsequent chapters. There are good links to related chapters in the book.

Conclusion
This book covers a wide range of performance topics and techniques, with the central aim of improving the performance of your SQL workload. It is generally easy to read, with practical step-by-step walkthroughs, helpful links between chapters, and good use of screenshots. Typically, code is provided to back up the assertions made. The book should take your level of expertise from level 3 to level 8 (based on a 1 to 10 scale).

While this book covers the majority of code-based performance topics, there were times when I wanted more detail. There was no mention of the more advanced performance tools like SQLDIAG or SQL Nexus. Sometimes the structure of the book felt awkward e.g. perfMon is explained in the memory chapter but its example usage is given in a later chapter. Having a separate detailed tools chapter, that is repeatedly referenced, may have been better.

This book is very similar to the 2012 edition of the book; while the screenshots have been updated for 2014, the text is perhaps 80% the same or similar. Although written for SQL Server 2014, much is applicable to 2012 and 2008. If you want a good, wide ranging, SQL code optimization book, I can certainly recommend this book.

"… very innovative … provides a very rigorous analytical treatment starting from the modeling of the PV field and the power converter stages as well as the dynamics of the overall system, including MPPT control. This in-depth analytical description allows the design of power converters and DMPPT algorithms improving the overall efficiency of the whole PV system operating under mismatching conditions."
―Dr. Francesc Guinjoan, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain

"… a concise but complete compendium of the required knowledge to understand, design, and control photovoltaic systems. … a good introduction to photovoltaic systems … also presents most of the recent advances on photovoltaic optimization … the authors are very well known in the scientific community, which provides confidence on the equations and conclusions given in the book."
―Carlos Andres Ramos Paja, Universidad Nacional de Colombia

The Nature of the Future: Dispatches from the Socialstructed World, by Marina Gorbis

A renowned futurist offers a vision of a reinvented world.

Large corporations, big governments, and other centralized organizations have long determined and dominated the way we work, access healthcare, get an education, feed ourselves, and generally go about our lives.

The economist Ronald Coase, in his famous 1937 paper "The Nature of the Firm," provided an economic explanation for this: Organizations lowered transaction costs, making the provision of goods and services cheap, efficient, and reliable. Today, this organizational advantage is rapidly disappearing. The Internet is lowering transaction costs - costs of connection, coordination, and trade - and pointing to a future that increasingly favors distributed sources and social solutions to some of our most immediate needs and our most intractable problems.

As Silicon Valley thought-leader Marina Gorbis, head of the Institute for the Future, portrays, a thriving new relationship-driven or "socialstructed" economy is emerging in which individuals are harnessing the powers of new technologies to join together and provide an array of products and services. Examples of this changing economy range from BioCurious, a members-run and free-to-use bio lab, to the peer-to-peer lending platform Lending Club, to the remarkable Khan Academy, a free online teaching service. These engaged and innovative pioneers are filling gaps and doing the seemingly impossible by reinventing business, education, medicine, banking, government, and even scientific research.

Based on extensive research into current trends, she travels to a socialstructed future and depicts an exciting vision of tomorrow.

How and why "we are infusing more and more of our economic transactions with social connectedness"
By Robert Morris
Why did Marina Gorbis write this book? Her core contention "is that the innovations rapidly emerging through socialstructing are not mere fringe developments but are the early manifestations of a new economy that will increasingly replace the institutional production we have come to rely on in so many areas of our lives. A number of industries are already being profoundly disrupted by the rise of socialstructing such as publishing and the music business. Over time this emerging socialstructed economy will likely become mainstream, but that might be a long-term process. I believe we can all benefit right now, though, by learning about the ways the new economy is rapidly evolving and by taking part in it." Her book, then, offers a rigorous and comprehensive explanation of the aforementioned "ways" as well as well as her counsel as to how best to participate in the new economy.

As I began to read her book and then later while re-reading it prior to going to work on this review, I agreed with the subtitle that each of the nine chapters could be viewed -- and probably [begin italics] should [end italics] be viewed as a "dispatch" from someone who has explored the socialstructured world. Others may think of Gorbis primarily as a futurist but I view her -- as I also view others such as Kees van der Heijden, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger and Kenneth Cukier, and Peter Schwartz -- primarily as an anthropologist. In The Nature of the Future, she focuses on what she believes to be the most likely implications and consequences of the aforementioned "early manifestations of a new economy." It is also possible to view her book as a map or, better yet, as a GPS by which to navigate the transition to the socialstructed world now underway. When embarked on this journey, Gorbis suggests, it is imperative to bring passion, self-direction, and social connectivity into all domains of our lives. I view them as the new currency, if not now then soon, or in years to come.

These are among the dozens of passages that caught my eye, also listed to indicate the scope of the material that Gorbis examines:

o Opening Up Biology to the Masses (Pages 4-8)
o From The Margins to the Mainstream (15-19)
o Distributed Communications, Distributed Value Creation (23-25)
o Scale Disrupted (31-38)
o Beyond Money: New Forms of Exchange, New Kinds of Currency (46-53)
o Socialstructing Wealth (61-67)
o Socially Embedded Learning: Community as a Driver and Enabler of Learning (82-86)
o Open Data: Shifting Power from Elites to Citizens (102-106)
o Decision Support Tools: Better Decisions with Help from Algorithms (106-111)
o Lightweight Research Tools: Empowering Amateurs (127-131)
o The Body as a Complex System: Collaborating to Decode the Mysteries (156-161)
o Beyond Scenarios: Directions of Transformation (189-191)

Thoughtful readers will appreciate Gorbis' brilliant coverage of various future scenaria for 2021: Free-Range Architecture (Pages 68-73), The New Agora (93-102), Open-Source Biology (120-124), Partnerships of Experts (148-154). With regard to the sociostructed future, she suggests "a world of unthinkable possibilities" as these scenaria suggest: Rebalancing - A New Symbiosis of Money and Sociostructs (175-182), The Social Currencies Economy -- Turning Social into a Commodity (182-185), and Return of the Gift Society - Reintegrating Economics into Life (186-189). As she notes, "We created social technologies. Our next task is to create social organizations: systems for creating not merely goods but also meaning, purpose, and greater good." Seth Godin calls them "tribes." Paul Spiegelman and Bo Burlingham co-founded what has become the Inc. Small Giants Community.

Before concluding this book, Gorbis quotes a passage from a document formulated in 2007 that affirms the values of the Institute for the Future (IFTF) in its vision document: "Valuing open collaboration, independence, and the ability of anyone to [begin italics] rise to the endeavor (end italics], we draw on network leadership models that provide a platform for self-organizing structures. The value of these self-organizing structures is that they can act quickly, responsively, and creatively from the edges. The guiding concepts in this view of leadership are openness, self-election, continuous prototyping, robust platforms, and low coordination costs. Leadership skills focus on community building, consensus building, mediation, commitment, and humility."

This statement could also serve as a vision document for the human race as it proceeds into an uncertain, frequently perilous future in months and years to come.

Interesting ideas
By Matthew Janes
A good read with many interesting thoughts about how social groups, corporations, governments, etc, are being reorganized by the internet and how that may change the future. At points I found the book somewhat hand-wavy and wished for more detailed support of its arguments. Though the book predicts decentralization and a shift to organizing society through social interaction instead of money, it fails to address the massive rise in income inequality we are seeing right now. That aside, it raised several interesting ideas, and also brought to my attention several other books I am going to have to look into.

not my kind of logic
By Martin at Silflay
Maybe my left-brain mind is just too rigid, but I found the basic thesis of the book unconvincing. Yes, non-financial motivations are important, and yes, Drucker did say very positive things about how to manage volunteers successfully. But I don't think there's anything wrong with increasing material value, and I think the real transformation is more likely to be driven by Singularity-type exponential tech advances rather than a return to a gift economy. Exponential tech will drive huge social transformation, but not, I suspect, in this direction.

Adorable and creative children's book.
By Erin E. Smith
My kids, ages 4 and 5, really enjoyed this book. My daughter asked me to read it to her three times the day we got it. The Beast is a sweet character that the kids immediately loved, the illustrations are wonderful, and the story is fun, a little silly, and very endearing. Your kids will enjoy it and so will you.

Synopsis: The Beast feels lonely one day and goes on a trek over many terrains and through the ocean looking for more Beasts. He eventually finds some friendly people in the big city, whom he likes but he soon begins to miss his old home and heads back. The Beast finds a fun surprise waiting for him when he finally returns home.

FInding Home and Friends
By Catherine W. Hughes
When a rare beast becomes lonely, he sets out to find more beasts. Traveling through all sorts of environments, the beast walks and walks until he finds a city. People in the city visit the beast and he talks on the radio and television, not to mention in the paper, but the beast still feels lonely and he misses his home. The beast travels back through all of the environments, only to discover that his fellow beasts, lonely, too, had come to find him in his garden. Children ages 4-7 will appreciate this story of being different and finding home and friends.

A delightful book in every way. The illustrations appealed to me as much as to my son and daughter. Others have summarized the book well, so I will only add my voice cheering Mr. Judge, and asking him for more great books!

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Far more than a superb memoir about the highest levels of professional tennis, Open is the engrossing story of a remarkable life.

Andre Agassi had his life mapped out for him before he left the crib. Groomed to be a tennis champion by his moody and demanding father, by the age of twenty-two Agassi had won the first of his eight grand slams and achieved wealth, celebrity, and the game’s highest honors. But as he reveals in this searching autobiography, off the court he was often unhappy and confused, unfulfilled by his great achievements in a sport he had come to resent. Agassi writes candidly about his early success and his uncomfortable relationship with fame, his marriage to Brooke Shields, his growing interest in philanthropy, and—described in haunting, point-by-point detail—the highs and lows of his celebrated career.

From Booklist
Agassi has always had a tortured look in his eyes on the tennis court. In 1992, when he burst onto the world sports stage by winning the Grand Slam at Wimbledon, he looked like a deer in headlights. Nobody seemed more surprised and upset by his big win that day than he did. For good reason, too. Agassi hated tennis. This is the biggest revelation in his very revealing autobiography. Agassi has hated tennis from early childhood, finding it extremely lonely out on the court. But he didn’t have a choice about playing the game because his father drove him to become a champion, like it or not. Mike Agassi, a former Golden Gloves fighter who never made it professionally, decided that his son would become a champion tennis player. In militaristic fashion, Mike pushed seven-year-old Andre to practice relentlessly until the young boy was exhausted and in pain. He also arranged for Andre, age 13, to attend a tennis camp where he was expected to pull weeds and clean toilets. The culmination of all of this parental pushing came when Andre began winning as an adult. But it didn’t make him happy. Within this framework, Agassi’s other disclosures make sense. He had a troubled marriage to Brooke Shields that didn’t last. He developed a drug problem that sabotaged his career. He was insecure about everything. Only when Andre met tennis star Steffi Graf (whom he eventually married) did things begin to change. Readers will definitely cheer when Andre finally makes peace with the game he once hated and learns to enjoy it. --Jerry Eberle

Review

A New York Times Notable Book and a Forbes, San Francisco Chronicle, and Washington Post Best Book of the Year

“Agassi may have just penned one of the best sports autobiographies of all time. Check—it’s one of the better memoirs out there, period. . . . An unvarnished, at times inspiring story [told] in an arresting, muscular style. . . . Agassi’s memoir is just as entrancing as his tennis game.”
—Time

“Fascinating. . . . Inspiring. . . . Open describes Agassi’s personal odyssey with brio and unvarnished candor. . . . [Agassi’s] career-comeback tale is inspiring but even more so is another Open storyline. It could be called: The punk grows up. . . . Countless athletes start charitable foundations, but frequently the organizations are just tax shelters or PR stunts. For Agassi helping others has instead become his life’s calling. . . . Open is a superb memoir, but it hardly closes the books on an extraordinary life.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“Honest in a way that such books seldom are. . . . An uncommonly well-written sports memoir. . . . Bracingly devoid of triumphalist homily, Agassi’s is one of the most passionately anti-sports books ever written by a superstar athlete.”
—The New York Times

“Not your typical jock-autobio fare. This literate and absorbing book is, as the title baldly states, Agassi’s confessional, a wrenching chronicle of his lifelong search for identity and serenity, on and off the court.”
—Los Angeles Times

“The writing here is exceptional. It is can’t-put-down good.”
—Sports Illustrated

“An honest, substantive, insightful autobiography. . . . The bulk of this extraordinary book vividly recounts a lost childhood, a Dickensian adolescence, and a chaotic struggle in adulthood to establish an identity. . . . While not without excitement, Agassi’s comeback to No. 1 is less uplifting than his sheer survival, his emotional resilience, and his good humor in the face of the luckless cards he was often dealt.”
—The Washington Post

“The most revealing, literate, and toes-stompingly honest sports autobiography in history”
—Rick Reilly, ESPN

“Much more than a drug confession—Agassi weaves a fascinating tale of professional tennis and personal adversity. . . . His tale shows that success is measured both on and off the court.”
—New York Post

“Not only has Agassi bared his soul like few professional athletes ever have, he’s done it with a flair and force that most professional writers can’t even pull off.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“[A] heartfelt memoir . . . Agassi’s style is open, all right, and his book, like so many of his tennis games, is a clear winner.”
—O, The Oprah Magazine

“Hard-won self-knowledge irradiates almost every page of Open. . . . Not just a first-rate sports memoir but a genuine bildungsroman, darkly funny yet also anguished and soulful. It confirms what Agassi’s admirers sensed from the outset, that this showboat . . . was not clamoring for attention but rather conducting a struggle to wrest some semblance of selfhood from the sport that threatened to devour him.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“A riveting and reflective memoir by a man who rose to the top of his sport—despite hating it.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Celebrity tell-alls have rarely been this honest and this interesting.”
—Baltimore Sun

“A vivid portrait of the internal battle faced in some measure by every athlete.”
—Bloomberg News

“Articulate. . . . Expertly rendered.”
—The Morning News (Boston)

“Refreshingly candid. . . . This lively, revealing, and entertaining book is certain to roil the tennis world and make a big splash beyond.”
—Publishers Weekly

This book will change you. In a good way.
By A&H
So you're thinking this might be one of those recently retired famous people books aren't you? One where a celebrity, or a Politician, or a sports star cranks out hundreds of pages of self-serving, history-correcting drivel in order to cash the big advance check. A book you can't even bring yourself to finish; better than a tranquilizer at bedtime.

Well, this is certainly not that book. "Open" is a journey that I predict will stay with you for a very long time. It's a completely unexpected trip to places you've never been. I'm not one of those quasi-professional reviewers you see on Amazon. But this book practically made me write about it.

Interestingly, Open starts not at the beginning and not quite at the end. Second round, US Open, 2006.

Not the final match of Andre's career--but the one right before that.
Against a competitor you'd never heard of before or since.
The battle was against the guy across the net, and also Andre's hatred of tennis, his failing body, the demons that he harnessed to get through the unending heroic contest that seemed destined to continue until both just fell into a heap on the court. And it is so well told.

After 20 pages, I knew that this was unlike any other biography I had ever read. Couldn't put it down. Couldn't stop thinking about it. Agassi dug deeper inside than most of us ever will have to, to get to core of what made him so powerful as a player and so conflicted as a person. It is all conspicuously real: The small moments, the outlandish triumphs and the friendships that sustained him and/or corrupted him. The gauntlet he had to run through to arrive at the balance and joy he has today. It's transformative.

The headlines about this book have mostly related to Andre's drug use when he was at his lowest. But honestly, although it marked the place from which he recovered and flourished, it's only an incidental part of this story. The story is actually about perseverance, intelligence and raw talent all baked together into a very, very large American life.

If Open doesn't win a Pulitzer Prize, something is terribly wrong. Can I nominate it?

Image Is Everything
By prisrob
Andre Agassi has written a 'tell-all' book about his life in tennis. And, it turns out, he hated tennis. That was a bigger shocker to me than the salacious fact that he was on 'crystal meth'for a period of time. J.R. Moehringer, the author of 'A Tender Bar' and a Pulitzer Prize winner for his writing was a co-author of this autobiography. Andre loved Moehringer's writing in 'The Tender Bar', and he is correct, the man's writing and the book are excellent. This book, too, is very well written and is an exceptional read.

Andre tells us that he started playing tennis at the age of 3 and by the age of 5 he was showing an aptitude for the game. He was pushed by his father-an obsessive man who pushed his son too far and too much. In fact his father felt that education was not necessary and a hindrance to his tennis practice. Andre could never tell his father how much he hated the game because it was Andre's responsibility to help his family, and that is what he did. He left school in the ninth grade, something that has bothered him his entire career. His goal was to achieve in tennis. He was enrolled in the Bollettien tennis camp, but it felt more like a prison than a camp. The academy, in Agassi's words, was "Lord of the Flies with forehands." In retaliation Andre started wearing earrings, grew his hair long and wore loud clothes. Thus his reputation was born. As his career started to flourish, Andre, tried to keep it all together. He was known as the flamboyant player, the real player. He played the best tennis players in the world, and he was one of the best. He had an eye for the ball, and the 'tell' of players when they were about to hit the big one.

Andre Agassi talks about his rivals, the ones who were boring, the ones who kept it all together and the the real players; Pete Sampras, Boris Becker and Jimmy Connors The book is at its best when the game of tennis is being discussed. Each play during the tournaments and how he figured out how to win. He talks of his marriage to Brooke Shields, he never really wanted to be married, just like he never really liked to play tennis. His crystal meth years, the spiel he gave the Tennis Association when he tested positive for drugs. He finally met and married Steffi Graf and found the happiness that had so long eluded him.
He has built a life and a foundation that sponsors a charter school. He gave the first graduation speech and wowed the crowd. A ninth grade drop-out he has achieved success and fame. He has found his life and he has become Open. For anyone who loves tennis, this is a book that will be a fascinating look at the life of a giant in the tennis world and told in words that best describes him. He finally lives down his famous words 'Image Is Everything'.

Highly Recommended. prisrob 11-09-09

Inspiring - Must Read
By A. Velautham
We have all read the press and watched the news; the drug allegations, the "I hate tennis". Tennis fans aren't quite sure whether they should feel cheated for all the love and support they have given Andre, to me the book set things straight.

Most of us look back at chapters of our lives and can identify with particularly unhappy periods. Andre kicks off the book with what was going through his head with the match against Baghdatis in the 2006 US Open. It is a blow by blow account of key parts of the match and a thought provoking glimpse into the mind and heart of a tennis player. He then goes straight into his childhood, the discomfort and unhappiness of being the child prodigy son of an obsessive father. There are weirdly honest stories - his grandmother tried to breastfeed him, very disturbing but a revelation of a dysfunctional upbringing. What seems to carry Andre through his childhood are friendships with his brother Phil and Perry who later becomes his manager. The importance of the childhood friendships are critical and from the way they are explained it is easy to understand why these friends are crucial figures for Andre.

The critical friendship is that of his mentor/guide/life coach/surrogate father Gill Reyes. Andre is taken under his wing and treated with the love and respect a father should treat his son, you sense through the stories in the book that now they have met each other neither could really exist happily without the other. His marriage with Brooke Shields is dealt with candidly, many will buy this book to find out what celebrities do behind closed doors. Whereas I did think Brooke appeared superficial from some of the things mentioned here, I think it merely shows how fame affects people differently. It appears that fame as a child makes people so perception orientated that perceptions are more important than anything else - who can judge the pressures these guys live through? Perfectly understandable in my opinion.

The drugs issue is dealt with here but only for a few pages in the book. The very weird thing is it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Like most fans I was shocked and somewhat critical of the damage to his sport. But, I could understand after reading the book how stupid mistakes can be made. Off the book for a second truth is he wouldn't have got the endorsements for 10's of millions had he been suspended, or there would have been a clause in his existing deals that he would have broken had the allegations come out. However, reading the book and seeing what has been done with the money I can't help but feel it was better for everyone that nothing came out at the time.

Andre talks about his attraction to Stefanie from many years back, the courting process is just the same as you or I. We all have been through that 'has the phone just rung?' depression when expecting a call from someone we are interested in. It does feel almost story like the way they end up together, but we all have a story like this just not in the press.

Players are mentioned here all the time, the interesting one for me was Becker 'B.B. Socrates' they call him because he 'tries to appear intellectual but is just an overgrown farmboy', this is going to do nothing for Becker's ego. The rivalry with Becker seems more important than that with Sampras - who would have thought?

Another of those important times for Andre was a meeting with Mandela, a truly humbling experience for anyone. This times perfectly with the starting of his Charter school and I presume was a defining moment for him.

Overall, hey I got the book yesterday and I read 325 pages the first day this should tell you all you need to know. I felt sorry for Andre with his childhood but towards the end I understood how his father really wanted the best for everyone. Andre is surprisingly influenced by anyone he trusts - guided more by his heart than his head, he appears to live life to please for much of the book which is pretty much the way a child acts. His first marriage is what everyone else wants to see but he is developing on another level through his interactions with his trainer Gil, the goalposts are always changing as he tries understands what he wants from life. His 'hate' of tennis develops into an appreciation and respect.

When you read this book you will see parallels between what you go through in life with what a celebrity goes through but you go through it perhaps without the press. It is incredibly well written, so well written in fact that most will not credit Andre for the writing. This is what is says it is, an autobiography not just a tennis manual. Enjoy!
