A necessity for 21st century educators

This book was exactly what I was looking for. As a teacher trying to start a one-to-one iPad program, I found the pedagogical section to be informative and insightful, buttressing my effort to create a clear and cogent plan to submit to my administration and empowering me to be able to answer any queries about the logistics of such a program.. The technological breakdown makes the entire process digestible to even the most technologically impaired educators.

However, I think what makes this book so incredibly useful is that it is written by teachers who have navigated the pitfalls of spear-heading this educational technology movement. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the book is written in plain English. This is not written by theorists with complicated jargon, but by real human beings who do a wonderful job of preparing the reader for any of the pratfalls that are inherit in such a daunting undertaking.

If you are in the process of, or plan to start a one-to-one program, this is a must buy.

Out of date but motivates modern developments

At the time of publication of this book, there was growing interest in how to formulate quantum field theory in spactimes with curved metrics with the intent of studying to what extent a non-flat curvature would change the properties and behavior of quantum fields as compared to the Minkowski case.The authors give an introduction to this research and they do a good job in that regard. Due to the influence of superstring and M-theory on high energy physics at the present time, fewer researchers are studying the problems as they are cast in this book. On the other hand, interest in the Casimir effect and the behavior of quantum fields at boundaries is still very much alive. This book could still be use to motivate this research. It is expected that anyone reading this book will have a background in quantum field theory in flat space, but one could still perhaps read it without such a background.
Quantum field theory in flat spacetime is difficult enough, and it is still not entirely understood from a mathematical perspective. Even the physics of interacting quantum fields is still poorly understood in flat spacetime, especially in its ability to predict a bound state. Therefore, it might seem a bit disconcerting to some for researchers to add further complications to quantum field theory by casting them in curved backgrounds. However, cosmological and astrophysical interests drives this research, as well as more practical considerations arising from the Casimir effect.
The renormalization procedures in quantum field theory are further complicated in curved spacetime via the "trace" or "conformal" anomalies. The reader gets a good dose of these in the book in the discussion on the renormalization of the stress. The idea of an "effective" action, which has been exploited with zeal in the flat spacetime case, appears here also.

The most important thing to carry away from this book is that the idea of a particle in curved space quantum field theory is not very well-formulated, i.e. particle detectors in such situations are not related to the quantity of matter present in a region as they are in the flat-space case. Doing quantum field theory when gravity is present has instigated a huge amount of research, related to the still unsolved problem of just how to quantize the gravitational field.

One of the better books on quantum fields that I have read so far. An especially good treatment of the Casimir effect and boudary terms is given. The authors have a wonderfully conversive manner of discourse which I enjoyed very much.

The Internal Revenue Code is more than just the law of the land; it is a sophisticated partnership agreement between the U.S. government and every U.S. person. This partnership is one of the most technically complex arrangements imaginable. The role of a tax adviser on an business acquisition transaction is to make everyone aware that there are two "silent partners" in the room at all times and that the Buyer and Seller have a common interest in cutting the silent partners out of the deal or reducing their take. Anyone who has considered the tax effects of a merger or acquisition has probably felt overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of the tax law. It is very easy to get mired in the nuances of the rules and lose sight of the practical applications. Darby's book, Practical Guide to Mergers, Acquisitions and Business Sales provides clarity and focus.
My copy of his book is well used - dog-eared and full of highlights and pencils notes! It serves me in two important ways. First, when I am not familiar with a certain aspect of the rules, the book provides a straight forward discussion and examples. Second, when I find myself getting lost in the maze of M&A rules out there, the book provides focus and grounding.
I highly recommend this book to those just entering the exciting world of tax M&A as well as experienced users in need of a guide to keep them centered.

Necessity for any Attorney

This book is a must for any attorney. It is easy to read, written with a pragmatic tone that avoides uncessary discussion of theory that is useless to practitioners. I bought this book in the spring of 2007 for attorney Darby's class at the Boston Universtiy School of Law LL.M. taxation program. If I have a tax question concerning a merger, acquisiton, or sale I always start with this book. It provides a starting point for my analysis, which I supplement with more detailed treatises if necessary.
