‘...a unique and valuable support for all those involved or interested in drug therapy. This is a textbook that no university or pharmacy department, particularly those with employees studying at any level, and no pharmacist trying to develop their knowledge base should be without."

Dr Chris Green and John Sexton, The Pharmaceutical Journal

From customer reviews of the previous edition:

‘An essential textbook for final-year pharmacy students! … detailed chapters on all of the areas covered in the clinical modules. Topics range from chronic renal failure to ischaemic heart disease.’

‘The chapters introduce the topic and they discuss symptoms, causes, epidemiology and available drug treatment. At the end of each chapter there are some well-written case studies, with questions and answers to illustrate the topic of the chapter. These put the learning into practice and are very good reading for exam revision.’

‘… very readable and contains many illustrations, tables and graphs which aid your learning. It will also be a useful tool for the Pre-Reg year, especially for those entering Hospital Pharmacy. ‘

‘It is a great book, every pharmacist or those aspiring to be should have it in their book shelf.’ ‘For any pharmacy or medical student, this text is incredible. It's got a wealth of material, is easy to use and understand (without being simplistic), and does an excellent job of integrating the principles of clinical pharmacy and pharmacology. This is one textbook I would strongly recommend for pharmacy undergrads, medical students and anyone looking for a book to provide a solid foundation to their study of applied clinical pharmacology.’

‘As a clinical pharmacist I have found this text to be quite comprehensive in its approach to discussing patient pertinent therapeutic assessment and achieving desirable outcomes. …The case studies assist me to do my own assessment and reflect on my personal experiences. This would serve as a great tool both at the academic and practicing level.’

A Great Value Pharmacotherapy Book
By Amazon Customer
At a third the price of most pharmacotherapy texts, this is a real gem of a find. This books narrative approach to clinical drug therapeutics is both informative and pleasurable to read. There are very few medical texts that I actually look forward to reading, and this has definitely made the list along with Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, Reinhart's Statistics Done Wrong and Southwick's Infectious Disease: A Clinical Short Course. I really love this book, but must mention its biggest downfall for an American audience. This is a British book, which means that lab value units of measure often differ with their US counterparts, and the same is true for many or the generic drug names.

Robert Altman's Soundtracks: Film, Music, and Sound from M*A*S*H to A Prairie Home Companion (Oxford Music / Media), by Gayle Sherwood Mag

American director Robert Altman (1925-2006) first came to national attention with the surprise blockbuster M*A*S*H (1970), and he directed more than thirty feature films in the subsequent decades. Critics and scholars have noted that music is central to Altman's films, and in addition to his feature films, Altman worked in theater, opera, and the emerging field of cable television. His treatment of sound is a hallmark of his films, alongside overlapping dialogue, improvisation, and large ensemble casts. Several of his best-known films integrate musical performances into the central plot, including Nashville (1975), Popeye (1980), Short Cuts (1993), Kansas City (1996), The Company (2003) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006), his final film. Even such non-musicals as McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) have been described as, in fellow director and protégé Paul Thomas Anderson's evocative phrase, as "musicals without people singing."

Robert Altman's Soundtracks considers Altman's celebrated, innovative uses of music and sound in several of his most acclaimed and lesser-known works. In so doing, these case studies serve as a window not only into Altman's considerable and varied output, but also the changing film industry over nearly four decades, from the heyday of the New Hollywood in the late 1960s through the "Indiewood" boom of the 1990s and its bust in the early 2000s. As its frame, the book considers the continuing attractions of auteurism inside and outside of scholarly discourse, by considering Altman's career in terms of the director's own self-promotion as a visionary and artist; the film industry's promotion of Altman the auteur; the emphasis on Altman's individual style, including his use of music, by the director, critics, scholars, and within the industry; and the processes, tensions, and boundaries of collaboration.

A fascinating topic finds a well-written and researched study.

The first comprehensive look at the complex relationship with music of one of America's greatest filmmakers. Thorough and original research and well written and entertaining. I raced ahead to the section on The Long Goodbye and then read the rest at a more leisurely pace. A very welcome addition to the literature!

Authorised and fully illustrated insight into the life and career of the award-winning director, from his childhood film projects up to King Kong, together with Jackson's revealing personal account of his six-year quest to film The Lord of the Rings.

Once, Peter Jackson was a name unknown to all but a small band of loyal fans and fellow film-makers. Now he is the newest member of Hollywood's elite fellowship, with his name on the most successful movie trilogy of all time.

Written with Jackson's full participation, this extensive biography, illustrated with never-before-seen photos from Jackson's personal collection, tells the inside story of how a New Zealander became Hollywood's hottest property – from the early cult classics, through Academy Award™-winning success with Kate Winslet's Heavenly Creatures, the abandoned King Kong remake, and the filming of The Lord of the Rings, a project which was abandoned two years into pre-production, rejected by most of the other studios and then picked up by New Line Cinema in the biggest gamble in film history.

Drawing upon interviews with fifty of Peter Jackson's colleagues and contemporaries, author Brian Sibley paints a portrait of a true auteur, a man gifted with single-minded determination and an artist's vision. Jackson himself is both revealing and insightful about his entire film-making life, from his first childhood steps filming in Super 8 to the grand realisation of his life’s dream: King Kong.

Together, these joint narratives provide a truly unique and compelling insight into one of the finest cinematic minds at work today.

Weighty and worthy
By Lance Wiggs
The book is on the shelves in New Zealand right now. It's a remarkable journey he has made, from struggling apprentice printer to mogul.

The book, like his movies, is long, and rewarding for it. The emphasis is more on pre-LOTR work and life, and it really focuses on the movies - no business or personal exposes here.

Three things struck me:

The first is his overwhelming passion for movies - passion that led him to just do it, rather than learn first by going to university. The results speak volumes, and he is in good company with this approach.

The second is that he is a leader with an ability to gather large amounts of people around him - from the first movie made with a bunch of mates on weekends, to LOTR with over 24,000 kiwis involved.

And the third is that he is an astute businessman - the book only hints at this, but it is clear from the continuous improvement in his Film Commission submissions, and the improvement in the deals struck with New line and Universal.

Read it.

"No" means nothing to Peter Jackson
By Matt
Picked up this biography years ago and have read it cover to cover twice.

It's an incredibly inspiring story. Peter's perseverance is quite incredible. He knew what he wanted to do with his life, and just went ahead and bloody did it!

It covers his life in great detail - particularly his early career where most biographers wouldn't bother to thoroughly explore. However some more photos from this era would be great.

FANTASTIC read! (Not for everyone, though...)
By Richard Dubois
Overwhelming "take home" from reading this book: Peter Jackson is an ultra-focused, driven, creative person who loves movies, and wants to make them the way HE wants. He will not be deterred in any way from what he wants to do.

OK-who is this book NOT for?

While this book is a biography, it has an extremely specific/narrow focus on his professional career. I mention this because this book is so focused on this one aspect of Peter Jackson's life, that if you are looking for something else than what this book focuses on, you probably won't be interested in this book. Also, if you are only interested in Peter Jackson's work on LOTR and, to a lesser extent, King Kong (forget the Hobbit movies, this book came out about 10 years ago-WELL before the Hobbit movies, in their current iteration, were even "on the radar"...), you won't find what you're looking for until about the last third of the book. The first two thirds of the book focus on his early work that very few people have seen, and covers a great deal of his early "splatter" movies. I've read plenty of biographies of people that are "sprawling" and spend equal times recounting a person's personal life as well as whatever aspect of their life they are famous for. If you are looking for a lot about the "man behind the world-famous director", this book won't DIRECTLY give you that insight. INDIRECTLY you learn a lot about Peter Jackson as a person, but only what you can glean through his actions with respect to his job, not through any "personal" stories in the book, because there really aren't any.

While the beginning of the book does briefly go through Peter Jackson's life as a kid, there are not a lot of personal anecdotes-the majority of things shared from his early days as a kid revolve around the way his obviously-loving parents supported his dreams of becoming a film maker (going so far as to build a no-frills, yet substantial, addition of a built-in garage to their house for him to have a working space as an aspiring special effects person/movie maker.

A GREAT deal of time is spent showing the "business" and "politics" of how movies get made in Hollywood. While Peter Jackson says throughout the book how much he detests these facets of film making, he had to deal with it quite a bit in the early years of his career as he was constantly struggling to find financial backing for his films. As I said, the book is ultra-focused on his professional career, so a great deal of the book covers correspondence back and forth between Peter Jackson and the New Zealand film commission-a national entity charged with strategically funding promising New Zealand film makers. There are TONS of excerpts of letters back and forth that highlight Peter Jackson's humble, yet focused, unapologetic approach to doing whatever he needed to do in order to get his movies made.

While the book never "bogs down" with data/financials in the depiction of the intricacies of movie making, it does provide enough in-depth discussion of the way movies are made so that it felt like the introduction to a college course about film making.

If you are like me and enjoy immensely the behind the scenes footage that was included with the LOTR and King Kong extended edition DVD movies, you will find plenty of that type of material in this book. Those items are covered more in-depth in the DVD's since they can use visuals to accompany the interviews, but the thought process/design considerations get a good amount of coverage in this book.

I found this book to be inspirational not so much because I am a lover of Peter Jackson's LOTR and King Kong movies (which I am a HUGE fan of), but because of what came through LOUD AND CLEAR throughout the entire book:

a) He is a humble, unassuming man who is absolutely passionate about film making;
b) He is FIERCELY loyal to New Zealand and the people with whom he works-the same people follow him from project to project;
c) His genuinely friendly, calm, funny nature and commitment to the work make him a charismatic leader who gets people behind the scenes, and on screen, to give more of themselves than they would have otherwise agreed to;
d) He has a youthful/kid-like exuberance for what he does and has clearly created the life for himself that he always wanted!

Meanings and Metaphors
By YB
This book is a loose-leaf binder full of worksheets you can photocopy for teaching metaphors in daily English use. The worksheets mainly use British English, but they are high quality thus useful no matter what. This book is best used with more advanced students. I like this book a great deal because it is easy to use and there are not many books on the market about this topic.

From the Author
It was brought to my attention that I should take a moment to talk to the readers and fans of The Cedric Series.

I wish to share my inspirations for writing this story. This will explain a lot on how I came about creating these amazing ideas, characters, creatures, and events as a fictional work with heavy fantasy and romance elements in the mix. If one really wanted to drag out all its genres, I could label this a historical fiction, mythology, or even occult and paranormal. So far, Fantasy Romance has done this work the most justice for my readers' expectations.

Historical fiction can be applied to several parts throughout the series, whether it's a scene, event, or even a reflection of a character and their on-goings. What do I mean by this? Well a lot of you might get the Vladimir Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler references, but it dove deeper than that. King Frederic was the First King of Germans, the lepers in those times did indeed have to ring bells and seek refuge in colonies, Cerdanya was a real trade town, and so on. There are a ton of subtle hints here and there because I wanted to bring the unseen, untold side of the history during Medieval Times to a tangible state.

As far as the Mythology side of this series, I wanted to teach you all my version of forgotten lores, legends, and mythology. I did my best to not use anything that was newer than the 12th Century as I dug deep. Some of the concepts weaved in with my own perception was hard to obtain and justify. There was a lot of book buying, digging through a Medieval-age bestiary, and though I scoured the internet, it failed me often in my journey for research. As I created and developed each character, I did my best to tie them into one or more myths so that I may weave a wondrous story without limits. At the same time, I wanted some of you to get caught in a conversation or sitting in class and have that moment of, "Oh! I know how this myth goes!"

Let me enlighten you all on some of the tales, history, legends and myths stitched into some of these amazing characters you have experienced so far:

Cedric takes after a very forgotten and neglected epic legend from Medieval Times of the Russian Knight Hero, Ilya Muromets. Search him, check it out and feel free to compare what you unknowingly learned about this amazing legend. You'll be excited to see a red haired knight on a black horse as one of the images in the mix. Included in this was some really obscure Romanian beliefs involving early vampire-like stories. The off-shoots involving the strigoi showed less of fear towards these vampire creatures, but held a tone of sorrow and remorse. People who became these creatures had not finished living their lives (Including not ever getting married) and met the insane stipulations to come back as one of the undying. Truly interesting, and I can only hope to capture that same empathetic tone I had discovered in my digging.

Barushka combines a few tales as well, starting with his name drawn from the Russian Knight Hero tales. Other than that, I focused heavily on the Shag Foal lores. I was intrigued by the first few variants I stumbled on and found that the internet proved void of information. Amazingly, the hairy phantom horse tales started so long ago, there was no exact date as to when they began. The folklore was mysteriously always there. Adding to my wonder about this lore was the fact I stumbled on a 1927 Naturalist journal that devoted a section to them. Even this far forward, it was believed it may be an undiscovered species of horse! Despite that, the one thing I saw reflected in all the writing was that a shag foal approaches lone travelers and scares them so much that they run off to their deaths. Never once did the research say the horse actively killed someone.

Morrighan, Badbh, and Nemaine were derived from the tales involving the evil sorcerer Calatin. This was the older tale involving them that did not mix the three as one entity. There are no words to describe my frustration and disappointment at how many times that Badbh and Nemaine were labeled as alternative names for Morrighan. Especially when the story of the Legendary Cuchulainn made it clear that they were three sisters each with unique powers. Seeing that Badbh and Morrighan had earned the title of Goddess at some point through the passing of time, I felt the need to give Nemaine her own placement as a Goddess as well.

Romasanta is the most complex of all my characters. His name is taken from a man in history that is not as common as it once was, Manuel Blanco Romasanta. He was the first serial killer to be trailed and as you read book two of The Cedric Series you will see a lot of that history drawn upon. Feeding off the tragic aura, I pulled in both werewolf and wolf-related myths and lores, wanting to show a more accurate flow through a single entity. It was my intentions to bring in familiar aspects and add in the historically forgotten complications that modern book culture has failed to take into account. Those well-versed in mythology will be able to pick out elements on their own, but the amount of lore here is wide. Tales of Apollo and Daphne, Pan and Pitip, Fenrir, versipellis, Romanian beliefs of vampires were caused by a werewolf, Wolf of the Cemetery from Haiti, Romulus and Remus, and so on. There are deep seeds that I only give you teasers to the mythology that is mentioned here.

As for the monsters, you can say thank you to the Medieval Bestiaries. There are so many wild and crazy creatures in these that are no longer touched that I wanted to bring them to life again. Orms, Jidra, and Aitvaras were a few of the frightening things that travelers spoke of and warned each other about in their explorations. I can only imagine what they may have been based on, but there is a great sense of pride I take in including such monsters into my story. Granted, I have not followed their descriptions exactly and have embellished them with my own imagination, but I hope they make my stories more memorable.

In the end, I encourage my thirsty readers to explore what you've read in my The Cedric Series. Search the names, look deeper in the scenes, places, events and discover these in more detail. My goal is to introduce you to the forgotten lores and history while adding my own perspective and imagination into the mix. May this tale make its mark in your heart and open your world to the legacy our ancestors once talked about over the dinner table so long ago!

Happy reading and discovery!

Excellent!
By Stephen Copeland
I actually know the author - we were both students at devry and worked IT together. I remember her working on this back then while balancing a lot of pretty serious life issue's. It's a brilliant book that has had a lot of research put into it. I'm interested to look up where some of these fables actually came from and I'm definitely going to read her next iteration in the series, Romansanta. Thanks for writing this Val, it is inspiring, also, thanks for showing me how to troubleshoot printers! That saved me some trouble after you left :)

Excellent Novel
By Amazon Customer
Cedric the Demonic Knight is a great fantasy fiction novel. I can't put it down! It introduces new types of fantasy characters never before seen in any fictional novel (some are actually based on historical lore). The story line is exciting, the characters are well developed and the dialog is full of sarcasm and wit! I can only hope there will be a sequel - maybe Romasanta's story?? (Just a suggestion for Ms. Willis!)

The struggle to find oneself is the hardest thing of all
By TeraS
One of the things that seems to be, for the most part, very difficult for beings like Succubi or Incubi, in most stories, is to believe in is that there is something, or someone, for them that could be called a soulmate. It is the moment of their acceptance of that being true, whatever the form that makes a difference to them.

It becomes that much more difficult when the universe likes to play games with them, around them, and draw them into a place where almost anything can happen.

The thing is, in some cases, it can also see to it that they themselves can do anything as well.

Cedric has a goal, one that has driven him for most of his life. Revenge. In order to have that, he will do almost anything to gain what he needs to have that in his grasp. A chance encounter with Angeline starts them both on a path that neither expected, neither could see the results of, and with all of that… to come to change the world in ways unimaginable.

The most interesting part of this work are the characters by far. While the names of some are familiar, like Lilith among others, they are not quite what one expects them to be. There are quite a number of myths and legends written into and around these characters and in doing so the author weaves a deliciously complex and riveting tale. It’s a refreshing turn of the tale with all of those that Cedric and Angeline encounter, never stereotypical, and in doing so the story rises about a simple adventure story or romance, but into a much more gripping story of the growth within Cedric and Angeline.

At the beginning of the story, Cedric doesn’t quite come across as the sort of character that one might like, if at all. He’s a bit rough, a bit aloof here and there, and, to a point, he’s quite a cad at times. Part of that is his history, there is no doubt and it is a history that is very complex and really one of the most unique stories told that I have read in sometime. As the story unfolds, as Angeline’s purpose and connection to him turns from a matter of “just being” and into “never being without” the change in Cedric is breathtaking. The emotions, the need and want are very strongly told and in that comes reveals about Cedric that while at times are a surprise, they do not step outside of what is known about him, his past, and more importantly, what his future being to him.

He is not completely an Incubus, though it is a large part of him, and with that comes an ongoing internal struggle as the story is told. It is painful at times, occasionally head-shaking, but always tightly told. The reasons for his struggle, the awful past that haunts him and the fear that comes with it are when he is his most human which brings him to being a character that one cannot help but admire for his strength and how he comes to if not cope, then to come to terms with it.

Angeline follows a similar part through the story, going from perceived weakness, to discovering her past, what it means, and what it has done to her. As the story of her relationship with Cedric goes from grudging tolerance into acceptance, discovery and beyond, the strength within her character becomes a mirror to that of Cedric himself. It is her discovering that she is more than she believed, does more than she could have imagined, and, more than that, finds something within herself and within Cedric that answers a question within them both. Angeline’s transformation is as vast and complete as Cedric’s own and perhaps more so.

The work tells of a unique connection between Cedric and Angeline, and in that connection I have to admit that it bothered me from time to time in how it worked and what it did to each of them. But this was consistent throughout the story, and in the case of other Succubi and Incubi that appear, there was no exceptions or alterations in that. It’s important to keep how things work consistent and in this work it is.

Lilith appears in this work and in her appearances she is, just slightly, different enough from the legends that I liked her for what she represented. There is a change in her from when Cedric first encounters her and when she appears again in the closing chapters which isn’t really explained. I really would like to know what changed, why it is, and what that means between the two of them. I think that untold story would be interesting to see.

As Lilith is the Queen Succubus, then Boto is the King Incubus. He is also Cedric’s father and while he is that, there really isn’t anything that connects them together. There is, of course, another involved in the story about Cedric’s father, Morrighan and to other levels and connections, her sisters. There isn’t really much to like about Boto, but then he isn’t really meant to be much in the way of a good character. He is, quite simply, over the top and evil and within that comes a revelation about Cedric that was quite unexpected when it came in the story.

There are quite a number of surprises that appear as the story moves towards its climax. They all could have been impossible or be badly disconnected, but they were not. The plot is complex and one does need to pay attention as the events of the past come into play as the story goes onwards. There is a lot of detail, background and events that are told that matter and as such, and for the length of this work, attention should be held to the story throughout.

The writing has personality, character and it’s quite clear that the author cares very much to tell a story with heart and soul. I didn’t feel like anything was wasted in the storytelling, nor did I feel at the end of the work that the story was left hanging with many important things untold. There is a good sense of closure, of drawing this part of Cedric and Angeline’s to a point where the ending is a satisfying one.

The author also uses a very unique means of dropping the reader into the story that seems a bit odd at first and tends to make one ask “why is this happening” but when the last chapters appear and that in explained, I thought that was simply inspired storytelling. The questions were answered, the meaning is there, and that made the story much stronger.

It’s very rare that I do rate works as highly as I do this one. This is really an amazing work, one in which I felt very strongly connected with the characters and how the story was told. A truly amazing piece of prose in which anything is possible and sometimes anyone can do the impossible for the right reasons.

I’m giving this work a solid five out of five pitchforks.

A joy to read, a story well told, and most of all, the author’s own words tell how strongly she needed to tell this story… And it’s amazing.

So the only question is… When will the next book appear?

I can hardly wait…

My thanks to Valerie for sharing her work with me, taking the time to as well write a bit about her work in the SuccuWiki, and most of all, creating something that brought a lot of joy for me… There are very few stories that, for me, tell a story that’s new, refreshingly so in this case, and I wish her the best in her writing career…

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?, by Seth Godin

"This is what the future of work (and the world) looks like. Actually, it's already happening around you." -Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos.com

In bestsellers such as Purple Cow and Tribes, Seth Godin taught readers how to make remarkable products and spread powerful ideas. But this book is about you-your choices, your future, and your potential to make a huge difference in whatever field you choose.

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there's a third team, the linchpins. These people figure out what to do when there's no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. They may not be famous but they're indispensable. And in today's world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom.

As Godin writes, "Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. It's time to stop complying with the system and draw your own map. You have brilliance in you, your contribution is essential, and the art you create is precious. Only you can do it, and you must."

Amazon Exclusive: Hugh MacLeod Reviews Linchpin

Hugh MacLeod is an artist, cartoonist, and Web 2.0 pundit whose blog, gapingvoid.com, has two million unique monthly visitors. His first book, Ignore Everybody, was an Amazon Top Ten Business Book of the Year and a Wall Street Journal bestseller. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of Linchpin:

This is by far Seth’s most passionate book. He’s pulling fewer punches. He’s out for blood. He’s out to make a difference. And that glorious, heartfelt passion is obvious on every page, even if it is in Seth’s usual quiet, lucid, understated manner.

A linchpin, as Seth describes it, is somebody in an organization who is indispensable, who cannot be replaced—her role is just far too unique and valuable. And then he goes on to say, well, seriously folks, you need to be one of these people, you really do. To not be one is economic and career suicide.

No surprises there—that’s exactly what one would expect Seth to say. But here’s where it gets interesting.

In his best-known book, Purple Cow, Seth’s message was, “Everyone’s a marketer now.” In All Marketers Are Liars, his message was, “Everyone’s a storyteller now.” In Tribes, his message was, “Everyone’s a leader now.”

And from Linchpin?

"Everyone’s an artist now."

By Seth’s definition, an artist is not just some person who messes around with paint and brushes, an artist is somebody who does (and I LOVE this term) “emotional work.”

Work that you put your heart and soul into. Work that matters. Work that you gladly sacrifice all other alternatives for. As a working artist and cartoonist myself, I know exactly what he means. It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it.

The only people who have a hope of becoming linchpins in any organization, who have any hope of changing anything for the better in real terms, are those who have the capacity to do “emotional work” at a high level—to be true artists at whatever they set their minds on doing. The guys who just plod around the office corridors, just turning up for their paycheck.... Well, those guys don’t have a prayer, poor things. The world is just too interesting and competitive now.

And Seth then challenges us, the readers, to become linchpins ourselves. To make the leap. To become artists. To do emotional work, whatever the sacrifice may be. It’s our choice, and it’s our burden. Seth won’t be there to catch us if we fall, but to become the people we need to be eventually, well, we probably wouldn’t want him to, anyway.

Congratulations, Seth. You have penned a real gem of a book here. Rock on.

--Hugh MacLeod

Seth Godin's Linchpin WILL Stay With You
By Debbie S. Glade
While reading Linchpin I looked around a few times to see if author Seth Godin was perhaps peering through my living room window to see my reaction. It really felt like he was talking to me, singling me out. How could he know how I rationalize things?

"There are no longer any great jobs where someone else tells you precisely what to do."

Linchpin is a most unusual, well-organized, concise book about what it takes to become indispensable in the workplace - whether you work for someone else (at any level) or are self-employed. It's about how business has rapidly changed and how treating employees like factory workers (or doing your job like one) doesn't work any longer. We must make choices and take action to "chart our own paths" and add value that others do not. We cannot wait for a boss or a job description to tell us what to do, rather we must just take the initiative ourselves. Only then can we become indispensable "linchpins," rather than replaceable "cogs." There are so many fantastic quotes in the book too.

"You don't become indispensable merely because you are different. But the only way to become indispensable is to be different. That's because if you're the same, so are plenty of other people."

The 14 chapters in this book are each broken down into short segments with great headlines that summarize them. Godin uses special vocabulary words to describe the many factors that go into becoming a linchpin. These words have unique meanings in the context in which they are used. You'll learn interpretations for terms such as art, thrashing, gifts, resistance, pranja, ship, lizard brain, shenpa, emotional labor and others.

"Art is unique, new and challenging to the status quo. It's not decoration. It's something that causes change. Art cannot be merely commerce. It must also be a gift."

You'll never be bewildered or bored while reading Linchpin. It will awaken a part of your brain that you may have never used before. It will make you take a deep look inside your thoughts, patterns and habits and oblige you to realize there are things you can change right now to become more of a success, a true "artist." In fact, you may find yourself sliding down in your chair a bit while reading, like I did. But that's okay; it's part of the learning process.

"If all you can do is the task and you're not in a league of your own at doing the task, you're not indispensable."

This is particularly true in the chapter on page 101 entitled The Resistance. Just this chapter alone is worth the price of the book. You've got to read it twice to really capture all it offers. Here you'll be faced with all the reasons why you're currently not as indispensable as you could be - as you should be. Have you ever delayed a project and not delivered (Seth calls this shipping) on deadline just because you were trying to achieve perfection? That's resistance. It is the "lizard brain" way-of-thinking that causes us to resist. Do you find yourself doing a lot of busy work (obsessive email checking, Tweeting, etc.) rather than taking action that really adds value? That's resistance too.

"The lizard brain is the reason you're afraid, the reason you don't ship when you can. The lizard brain is the source of the resistance."

Godin will educate you on what it truly means to be a valuable gift giver. He'll tell you that there's no map in existence to help you become an indispensable artist. He'll tell you that you have a choice to either "Fit in or stand out. Not both." He'll even tell you that there are times when your art will not work, and for whatever reason, you may not be able to get paid for your particular talent.

"Maybe you can't make money doing what you love (at least what you love right now) But I bet you can figure out what you can do to make money (if you choose wisely)."

"There is no map. No map to be a leader, no map to be an artist. I've read hundreds of books about art (in all its forms) and how to do it, and not one has a clue about the map, because there isn't one."

The only thing Seth Godin left out of his well-researched Linchpin book is that his principles can be applied not only to business but also to other aspects of a person's life. Linchpins can be better spouses, friends and community members at large. They can be truly indispensable in many ways.

"Nothing about becoming indispensable is easy. If it's easy, it's already been done and it's no longer valuable."

Ever read a business or marketing book that is interesting while you're reading it, but two days after you have finished it, you cannot really remember the gist of what you read? Linchpin is not one of those books. This one will stay with you. There is nothing else like it; it can change your future. That is, if you set your lizard brain aside and replace it with the true linchpin artist in you.

An important message, but not a new one
By Bret L. Simmons
I got an early copy of Seth Godin's new book "Linchpin: Are you indispensable" because I made a $40 donation to the charity Acumen. In return, I agreed to review the book in a blog post at my site. Here goes, I hope you find this helpful.

Every once in a while I run across a book that is so important, so compelling, so unique with respect to not only content but also writing style that I can't put it down until I finish it. This is not one of those books (for me); nevertheless, I am going to recommend it because I concur with his core message and if you have not heard it before from other sources, I think you need to hear it now.

Parts of this book are brilliant - they will change how I talk about my core message. Much of what Seth had to say in this book was not new to me, and frankly I prefer the way others have said it. But Seth has a style of writing that will appeal to many, and I predict many will come away reading this book thinking it is the most important book they have read in a long time. Don't get me wrong, I am a BIG fan of Seth Godin, but for this book such claims would be pretentious.

Here is Seth's bottom line:

I didn't set out to get you to quit your job or to persuade you to become an entrepreneur or merely to change the entire world. All I wanted to do in this book was sell you on being the artist you already are. To make a difference. To stand for something. To get the respect and security you deserve. If I've succeeded, then you know that you have a gift to give, something you can do to change the world (or your part of it) for the better. I hope you'll do that, because we need you. (p. 230).

I think he succeeded, and if you have never heard this message, then I encourage you to get this book and read it. Seth is right, we need you to make a difference, to stand for something. YOU need you to make a difference.

A linchpin is someone that is remarkable. They bring the emotional labor to their work. They pour themselves into what they do because they know it is the right thing to do, and they become better people for living and working this way. This also makes them very scarce, and that scarcity makes them valuable - indispensable.

Seth defines art as "the intentional act of using your humanity to create a change in another person" (p. 99). I love that. Seth acknowledges that when we give to others, the law of reciprocity kicks in and they will feel indebted to return our favor. But Seth reminded me that when we give to others with no expectation of anything in return, that posture of unconditional generosity changes us. It creates abundance in our lives and in the lives of those we connect with at work and in our communities. I've known that for a long time, but is always good to be reminded of it. Thanks, Seth.

I wish this book had been 50 pages and free on the internet instead of 236 pages and $15 on Amazon. Then more people that need to hear this message of remarkable, abundant living might get it. Alas, this book to some extent represents the cog in the system that is the object of Seth's lament.

Godin's most important book...thus far
By Robert Morris
Others have their own reasons for praising this book. Here are five of mine. First, this is by far Godin's most personal book in which he reveals more of his emotions and "soul" (for lack of a better term) than he has in any of his previous books. Also, from the beginning, he establishes a direct and personal rapport with his reader. I felt that he had written this book specifically for me. Although he and I have never met, I felt as if he were speaking to me and discussing ideas with me as if we were engaged in a face-to-face conversation.

Moreover, unlike in most of his previous books, Godin does not climb up into a pulpit and launch a tirade, engaging his audience with a confrontational tone and Old Testament vehemence. He obviously cares deeply about the thoughts and feelings he shares but is at all times respectful of his reader. He repeatedly explains that everyone has several choices and urges his reader to make those only choices that are in her or his long-term best interest.

In addition, meanwhile, Godin creates a multi-dimensional context, a frame-of-reference, in which to anchor his insights and recommendations throughout the narrative. He skillfully uses what I describe as a bi-polar strategy: passively but alertly observing what is happening (and not happening) in order to recognize and understand the ever-changing realities of the world that we share and then actively challenging whatever demeans and diminishes anyone's dignity. Finally, Godin utilizes the manifesto genre as a means by which to celebrate humanity at its best, not as an ideal beyond human fulfillment but as an attainable destination if (HUGE "if") vision, faith, courage, integrity, and commitment are sufficient to the formidable challenges that await each pilgrim.

Near the downtown area here in Dallas, we have a Farmers Market at which some merchants offer complimentary slices of fresh fruit as samples. In that spirit, I now provide three brief excerpts from Godin's book.

On becoming indispensable to customers: "Here's the win (actually, there are two).

"If you want customers to flock to you, it's tempting to race to the bottom of the price chart. There's not a lot of room for profit there, though...In a world that relentlessly races to the bottom, you lose if you also race to the bottom. The only way to win is to race to the top. When your organization becomes more human, more remarkable, faster on its feet, and more likely to connect directly with customers, it becomes indispensable....

"Second, the people that work for you, the ones you freed to be artists [i.e. creators of unique, compelling, and substantial value], will rise to a level you can't even imagine. When people realize that they are not a cog in a machine, an easily replaceable commodity, they take the challenge and grow. They produce more than you pay them to, because you are paying them with something worth more than money....

"As a result of these priceless gifts, expect that the linchpins on your staff won't abuse their power. In fact, they'll work harder, stay longer, and produce more than you pay them to. Because everyone is a person, and people crave connection and respect." (Pages 35-36)

On résumés: "If you don't have a résumé, what do you have? How about three extraordinary letters of recommendation from people the employer knows or respects? Or a sophisticated project an employer can see or touch? Or a reputation that precedes you? Or a blog that is so compelling and insightful that they have no choice but to follow up? Some say, `Well, that's fine, but I don't have those.' Yeah, that's my point. If you don't have these things, what leads you to believe that you are remarkable, amazing, or just plain spectacular? It sounds to me like if you don't have more than a résumé, you've been brainwashed into compliance. Great jobs, world-class jobs, jobs people kill for - those jobs don't get filled by people e-mailing in résumés." (Page 73)

On the power of being genuine and transparent: "Virtually all of us make our living engaging directly with other people. When the interactions are genuine and transparent, they usually work. When they are artificial or manipulative, they fail.

"The linchin is coming from a posture of generosity; she's there to give a gift [no-strings support of your efforts to succeed]. If that's your intent, the words almost don't matter. What we'll perceive are your wishes, not the script.

"This is why telemarketing has such a ridiculously low conversion rate. Why corporate blogs are so lame. Why frontline workers in the service business have such stress. We can sense it when you read the script because we're so good at finding the honest signals." (Page 214)

For various reasons previously indicated, I hold this book in very high regard and conclude my review of it with one more observation: The person whom Godin characterizes as "indispensable" is defined by what is indispensable to that person. It could well be, for example, a sincere desire to be of service to others. Or it could well be a sincere desire to offer unconditional "gifts" of trust, faith, respect, and candor. Those whom Godin characterizes as "artists" possess the vision, faith, courage, integrity, and commitment needed to create -- in collaboration with others -- a "post-commercial world that feeds us, enriches us, and gives us the stability we've been seeking for so long." That said, it would be a serious mistake to underestimate or ignore the importance of self-interests. Those who create the world to which Godin refers also feed and enrich themselves as well as those whom they serve and with whom they share a community of faith. Only then can they obtain for themselves as well as others the stability they have been seeking for so long. That should be our vision and Godin challenges us to fulfill it.
