The silences between sentences

Originally published in a slightly different form in 1970, the current incarnation of John Banville's first book collects nine of Banville's short stories. Banville's skillfully crafted sentences are pregnant with meaning, his language is rich and evocative, but even more can be mined from the silences between sentences, the words left unspoken. In "Wild Wood," for instance, three boys in the woods talk about a woman who was murdered. The meat of this story is left untold; Banville leaves it to the reader to fill in the empty space. Similarly, most of the action in "Summer Voices" revolves around an old (possibly crazed) man who shows the body of a drowning victim to two children, a brother and sister. The real story, however, involves the relationship between the siblings, an innocence lost before their encounter with the dead body.

Nature, and particularly the sea (an instrument of death in "Summer Voices"), are recurring symbols in the stories. The sea surrounds the protagonist in "Island," a writer who, full of ambition when he leaves Ireland, grows stagnant while living on a Greek island. Or so says the woman he's with, the woman he's about to leave because she's too easy to understand.

Religion and death, estranged families and madness are recurring themes. "A Death" refers both to a death in the family and to the death of love. An old man at a funeral, ranting of evil and desolation and godless times, sparks the renewal of a discussion a couple must have had countless times before. Peter and Muriel, the lead characters in "Lovers," visit Peter's father before they leave town to start a new life -- a man who, having seen everything in his life slip away, is eager to meet his own death, but only after making sure that his son's hopes will also die. In "De Rerum Natura," a demented old man, bald with bandy legs like "an ancient mischievous baby," is attuned to the life that surrounds him, including the pigeons in the bedroom and the rats in the kitchen, but cannot make the same connection with the son who shudders at his "malevolent, insidious gaiety." But how much of the father lurks in the son?

One of the most thought-provoking stories (again, because of how much is left unsaid) is "Nightwind." A failed writer hosts a party where a murderer lurks on the premises and a friend makes a pass at his wife. The writer talks about the unhappy citizens of "the new Ireland" who are "trying to find what it is we've lost" but it is the writer's own losses -- of pride and ambition and his child -- that dominate his thoughts.

A couple of stories, I must confess, I didn't fully appreciate: "The Visit" concerns a girl whose mother died in childbirth. She waits to meet the father she's never seen, but her attitude changes after she talks with a strange little man on a bicycle. Julie, a student in "Sanctuary," discusses her fears of moving away as she prepares to leave her professor, Helen, with whom she has been spending the summer. Julie's fears are compounded by a visit from a black-clad stranger who seems to know Helen and who has come to say goodbye. Even the stories about which I was less enthused, however, provide early evidence of Banville's uncommon ability to conceal layers of meaning within simple stories.

I zipped through the short stories in a collection titled Long Lankin, representing early writing by John Banville. I found it hard to separate my perspective on the recent long fiction, which I loved, from these raw sketches. With the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for most readers to see the great skill that Banville displays in these early works. I finished each story somewhat satisfied, but wishing that the characters were more fully developed, as Banville has done in his novels. Some great writers specialize in genre, and I'm clearly biased that Banville's novels allow him the space to explore life more completely. These short pieces show great skill and insight, but left me longing for more.

John Banville never disappoints. His stylish and precise prose captures the frailty and chaos of the human condition brilliantly. It's impossible to gloss over his narrative or read without full engagement. The words breathe, discriminately constructed to elicit a visceral pathos or empathy. First published in 1970, this thin volume of nine short stories pulsates to stir the senses and provides a fine escapism from the banality of everyday by its keen uninhibited focus on the hidden turbulence that rocks beneath the skin and sinew. The characters that emanate from Long Lankin are memorable and poignantly relatable. Very satisfying and intelligent read.

About the Author
Len Harris is a staff writer and photographer for Midwest Outdoors. He also does freelance work and has appeared in American Angler, Field & Stream, and numerous other magazines and newspapers. His love for trout fishing has been shared on numerous Midwestern television shows. He also does presentations at local schools to spread his love for the outdoors to the youth of the area. Len recently started speaking at nursing homes. He says: "They can't go to the streams anymore so I bring the streams to them."

Well worth it!

I have known Len, or "Bugs" as we called him when we were kids, for as long as I can remember. He was always the big kid I wanted to hang out with but I really didn't know too much about him. I knew the basics. He played basketball for the high school. He was a staple at the town pool. I had also heard he had been in the Army, but I didn't learn much about that along with many of the other details of his life.
Len and his family have always been an important part of my life, but there was always a little something I didn't know about, not that it was hidden, but as the fine Norwegian stock we came from, we don't talk about feelings or things that shaped our lives. We just are and that's enough. Or at least that's what we figured because it's the way our parents were, so it was normal.
I met Len again in this book, "The Stream of Time." This time I got to know him as a boy and learned of the relationships he had with his Dad and many of the people who shaped his life. I always knew he liked to fish, but for years I thought it was just his hobby. Now I know it means so much more to him and all those he has the opportunity to share time on the water with in the "Driftless Area" of Wisconsin. This truly is his church and he worships at the altar of family values every time he prepares to fish.
Reading his book has given me a new perspective on my own experiences with my Dad and the all too few times we have been out fishing or hunting together. I am lucky, my Dad has been around my whole life and I have been able to share so much with him. But now, as both my "old man" and I grow older and having read this book, I find myself wanting to be able to share these experiences with my son as Len has done with his daughter Anna. The memories they have together can never be taken away and with Len's penchant for photography they can be shared vividly with all those who may happen to run into these trout stream anglers.
If you have the chance to pick up this book, I suggest you do so when you have some time on your hands. This collection of memories will have you pausing every few minutes to think back about that last fishing trip with your Dad or the first time you took your kid out to your "secret" fishing hole and before you know it you'll be finding yourself drifting along on your own stream of time.

The Stream of Time-A wonderful reminder of how beautiful life can be

My first contact with the author, Len Harris, came via an outdoor forum, Whereifish.com, where members are invited to their common love of everything "outdoors".
I started looking at Len's pictures and reading the stories he posted, and was "hooked", going to the forum everyday to read what he had posted.
I couldn't have been happier when I learned he was publishing a group of short stories, and became one of the first to read it.

Len is a fishing guide, freelance outdoor author, and photographer, (who can list some very well known people among his clients) and he is
a dedicated family man, and one who pays the knowledge he has learned forward.
He does this by sharing his knowledge of life with grade school children all through the area in which he and his family live,
by giving presentations called "Trout Don't Live In Ugly Places". Sharing incredible photography of the driftless area, and teaching them how
to open their eyes to the incredible beauty of the outdoor world around them. It made me wish my kids were going to school there.

Len's book, "The Stream of Time" is a beautifully written collection of short stories that share his growing up in the driftless area.
It is not just a book about fishing, it is a book about life.

Every story in this small book is a wonderful slice of life, simply and beautifully narrated by the man whose life was shaped by the experiences
he shares with the readers.
Every adult member of my family has read "The Stream of Time", and our children have read, or have had this great book read to them, and during
the reading, we all were reminded of the wonderful times we have had, and will continue to have, by sharing time and space together in
those beautiful areas that make up the world we live in.

"The Stream of Time" is a beautifully written book, a special collection of stories which remind the reader of how important it is to keep one's eyes open
to the world around them, because if you don't, you are cheating yourself out of something that is far to wonderful to miss.

Nada Faris represented Kuwait at The International Writing Program, USA, and at London's Shubbak Festival, UK. Nada has placed in the top two on four National Slam Poetry Competitions. As a performance poet, Nada has headlined everywhere in Kuwait, from KU, AUK, GUST, and AOU, to private and public schools, hotels, and cafes, to Kuwait's National Book Fair and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah. She also performed abroad at Busboys & Poets, Spit Dat, Iowa University, Senior College and more.

A highly engaging collection, full of emotion, from this very talented young writer, writing across different genres

Ms. Nada Faris is an up & coming, award-winning, and provocative writer of social articles, poetry, short stories, and a highly promising new young adult novel currently in serialization. Born and living in Kuwait, Ms. Faris chooses to write in English, showcasing not only her culture and related issues but wider social, human issues for both a home and an international audience.

So what do we have here in the interestingly titled `Before Young Adult Fiction'? Well, what we get is, in truth, sometimes a mixed bag of goodies, but a product that is always honest nonetheless. First up is the short-form prose: 1 novella and 4 short stories. The themes vary, taking in social status and expectations; the role, identities, and expectations of women; decaying relationships; the dangers of being highly outspoken; and the role of the media--themes that variously weave themselves in and out of stories about a divorced man shamed by his runaway wife and who is afraid of losing his teenage daughter; a bona-fide superhero who, tired of having to be constantly be available to everyone, seeks help from a psychiatrist; an witnessing the conversation between 2 Nazi soldiers; a role model who tries to conform but is undone by the media; a long-married couple decaying in their relationship. The opening novella, featuring the abandoned father, whilst full of interest is perhaps the weakest of the bunch, with its themes never quite fulfilled. Still, kudos to Ms. Faris for including this, for as her preface says, all the writing here represents her evolution as a writer over a number of years. It might have been too easy to go back and plug the holes, but that would be less honest than she's being in this collection.

The most memorable story for me was `A Melancholic Superhero'. I mean, what a great idea for a story! Full of heart, this neatly showcases people's expectations of others and the issue of taking responsibility.

Whilst all the stories are thematic, they are nonetheless stories, designed to entertain. The prose is rich, the narrative voices varied and textured, the characters diverse and distinct. These are not fictional excuses to rant or convey opinions. They may do the latter, but these are all highly readable and enjoyable stories.

Next up are a collection of 4 poems, all them placed or winners at festivals. `Artemis' is a standout, with its impassioned cry of pain for a failed relationship. A clear strength that pervades all of Ms. Faris' writing is the emotion that runs through it, never clearer than in her poetry. Unconstrained at times by strict rhyme and pentameter, they do nonetheless have clear, changing rhythm. But for me, not usually a fan of poetry, it's the raw emotion of `Artemis' that I enjoyed so much. Another stand out is `Dear Ms. English Teacher' in which Ms. Faris challenges her teacher to make language and literature relevant to her, to inspire her--all done with a good dose of wit and fun.

The collection then moves on to a group of 4 articles, dealing with adoption in Kuwait, workers' rights, the influence of literature over the ages, a plea for responsible capitalism, and finally a brief discussion on the importance of the specificity of words. Throughout these, Ms. Faris hasn't quite yet found her true narrative voice consistently; nonetheless, a wide range of topics is covered with the central issue clearly conveyed, which is why they've all been published (if I'm not mistaken).

Ms. Faris' compilation ends with a preview of her new young adult novel `Fame in the Adriatic'. Opening in Corfu and set mainly in Venice in 1533, it features a vivid and lively young female protagonist. Promising much early on with its satisfying prose and highly engaging first-person narrative voice, this is getting a lot of positive buzz from readers so far.

Overall, `Before Young Adult Fiction' showcases the development of a very talented young writer, writing across different genres, finding her style, and developing her voice. What I love is the honesty of the collection and, above all, the pervading emotion that resonates both throughout the book and after its final page... Ms. Faris' writing never fails to engage.

Already beginning to gain some national recognition in her home country, Nada Faris is a fresh new writer who doesn't want to conform to the same, tired formulae, at last not here. Taking risks, showing us how she's learned and developed, she wants to wake us up and get us to think.

What struck me after I'd read this was if she's as good as this now, just how good is she going to get down the line? I, for one, am looking forward to finding out.

Cogent summary of necessary political action in 2000.

This is a book is a wonderful and positive exposition on the ideas and actions that have created fundamental and profound changes in modernity--and can continue to do so, given the right education and application of these ideas.
I read it over the summer in four hours straight...something I have not done in a long time with any book, for it was both fascinating and illuminating in terms of an active modern politics today. I would recommend it strongly to students and practioners of politics, indeed everyone, for as Plato once said:
'The disadvantage of not participating in politics is consenting to be ruled by your inferiors.'
In short, Bronner has laid out some important paradigms that we must engage in if we, as world citizens, are to build a sustainable future.

GREY & McLAUGHLIN - What a team! COLD FACTOR - What a great story!

This is one of those books that grabs you very early on and takes you on a masterfully weaved and intriguing journey. It never slows down too much, keeping you thoroughly entertained throughout. The pacing is excellent and action is well placed. Pieces of a far larger puzzle are slowly handed to you as you progress through the chapters, and whilst it seems you are jumping around between places and time frames - it is never confusing. In fact, it's possibly the most fun part of the book - as you try to guess how it will all come together. The author is so descriptive and precisely detailed - that it becomes a very visual read. This makes it easy to get hooked onto very quickly - even though it has a far more complex and interwoven story behind the mental picture. Definitely a thriller/suspense novel - one assumes a Tom Clancy influence but very much a unique style. We are introduced to 2 characters whom I hope we will have the good fortune of seeing again soon : Grey & McLaughlin. I hope this book finds it's way onto your bookshelf or Kindle. It's worth it!

Outstanding First Offering!

I have just finished reading Klaus Schirmer's Book, "Cold Factor". This book falls into the category of suspense/thriller. While the premise of the book may seem to be somewhat far-fetched, the reality is that, with the progress science has made over the past several decades, this could happen, and it could happen now. We see how one man's insanity, unchecked, could lead to the destruction of the entire global economy, and by extension, the people. I appreciate the way in which the three culprits, Sato, Kulp and Kitayama meet their ends. Being the conspiracy theorist I am, however, I query whether the US government would have actually destroyed the technology. Grey and McLaughlin are a couple of characters I'd like to see again and would hope that some of Grey's compatriots might also become recurring characters in a very long-lived series of books. Job well done, Klaus!
