Quarantaine Blues (French Edition), by Mrs Florence Valerie Fox

By nicolas vanderheyden et christel visée

By Jay Russell

"Mommy, can we go home now? I'm tired of coloring."

Lainie Hollings fought back the nausea churning in her stomach and gently stroked her youngest daughter's hair. "Not yet, Chrissy. Why don't you use the green crayon for a while?"

A weary sigh accompanied the nodding of the little head. Lainie watched her girls, six-year-old Natalie and four-year-old Christiana, as they scribbled on the pages the officer at the Dover Mississippi Police Station had given them to keep them entertained. They couldn't go home because they had no home to go to. Her job as assistant to Mrs. Forsythe, a wealthy businesswoman in Memphis, Tennessee, had ended when her employer had moved away for health reasons. Thankfully, Lainie had quickly landed the position as head librarian for the Dover Public Library.

Today was their moving day. This morning, she had been filled with excitement and bursting with hope. This move marked the culmination of a dream she and her husband had once shared. They'd planned to leave Baton Rouge and its big city life behind and move to a small town where they could grow their family in a friendly, nurturing environment. They'd been saving for a house, but she had been forced to use the money for Craig's funeral instead. Alone and pregnant with their second child, she'd moved to Jackson, Tennessee to live with her mother and gone back to school at night to get her degree.

The past five years had been difficult, moving from place to place, job to job. The librarian position was her chance to find a permanent home.

So, they'd come to Dover a few days early to find a place to live and check into child care. It was supposed to be a fun trip discovering their new home. Instead, they were sitting in a police station, the victims of a crime. As they had been leaving a local restaurant, a man had shoved Lainie against her car, waved a gun in her face, then yanked her purse from her arm and fled. Thankfully, she'd already put the girls in the car. But all she had left were the car keys she held in her hand, and eight dollars and thirty-four cents—change from lunch, which she'd shoved into the pocket of her cotton slacks.

The moment replayed in her mind like a scene from a horror film, tightening the vise of fear around her chest. She lowered her head into her hands, fighting to keep the rising panic at bay. How was she going to take care of her girls? Where would they stay? She'd set aside money for a motel, but now, without a credit card or cash, that was impossible. Tears welled in her eyes and she brushed them away quickly, not wanting the children to see her upset. But she was barely holding it together.

"Look, Mommy, I colored it purple." Chrissy's blue eyes sparkled from behind her glasses.

"Good job, sweetie."

Looking at her precious girls, her throat constricted again. What if the thief had taken the car with the girls inside? What if he'd killed her? Lainie forced the terrifying thoughts aside. She couldn't give in to the fear. They were all fine, but destitute. She had no phone, no ID and no money. The only person she knew in town, Mr. Bill Ogden, mayor and president of the library board who'd hired her, was out of town for the weekend. They were on their own.

Unless Shaw McKinney showed up.

The knot in her chest grew. She clasped her hands together, squeezing tightly. While paying her bill at the restaurant, she'd noticed several business cards on display. One had a familiar name printed on it. Goudchaux McKinney Construction. Shaw McKinney, contractor. She'd picked up the card, the name unearthing anger and resentment she'd thought long buried. If it weren't for him, Craig would still be alive and her daughters would have a father. She'd shoved the card into her pocket along with the change. Shaw was the last person on earth she wanted to ask for help, but he was her only option. She'd given the card to the officer and asked him to call.

"Mommy, I have to go." Natalie wiggled in her chair.

Chrissy looked up, pushing her tiny glasses up on her little nose. "Me, too."

Lainie stood and looked around for her purse, wincing when she remembered it was gone. "Come on, girls."

Lainie took their hands and walked down the hall to the restrooms. She tried to quell the nervousness swirling in her stomach as she helped Chrissy wash her hands. Maybe when she returned to the lobby, Shaw would be here. She didn't want to think about what they would do if he didn't come. Worse yet, what if he did? Turning for help to the man responsible for her husband's death was repugnant.

Settling into the molded plastic chair again, she glanced toward the lobby entrance as yet another stranger walked in. She'd repeated this motion so often she now recognized the distinct squeak and swoosh of the door when it opened and closed. This time, it ushered in a gray-haired man carrying a large envelope.

"Mommy, can you draw me a rainbow?"

Lainie took one of the crayons and drew arched lines across the paper. "What's Shaw doing here in Dover, Mississippi, anyway?"

"What, Mommy?"

"Nothing, sweetie. I'm just talking to myself." The last time she'd seen Shaw was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Craig had hired on with Beaumont Construction, determined to learn carpentry so he could eventually start his own contracting firm. Shaw had been his instructor, the one assigned to show him the ropes and keep him safe as he navigated the dangers of the job. But he hadn't, and Craig had died.

Lainie pressed her lips together. They'd been sitting in the police station for two hours, filling out forms, answering questions. She had to face the possibility that Shaw might not come. He probably didn't remember her. She'd have to find another way to survive until she started her job next week. Maybe there was a homeless shelter in town. The idea made her sick. She'd worked hard the past five years to take care of her girls, and she'd done a decent job so far. But this wasn't the time to let pride stand in her way. Perhaps there was a church in town that could help. Their last resort would be to spend a few nights in the car until the mayor returned. Hopefully, he'd let her start work early or give her an advance to tide her over.

Closing her eyes, she clasped her hands in front of her mouth. Lord, help me. I have no one. Nowhere to turn, but You. You've seen me through these past five years. Please don't abandon me now.

Shaw McKinney ended the call and jammed his cell phone into his back pocket, grinding his teeth in exasperation. The drywall crew that was supposed to start today wasn't coming. Any more setbacks and this project might never be completed. He was already three weeks behind due to a series of unexpected delays. Thankfully, he'd obtained an extension, but the next deadline was set in concrete. Slowly, he walked through the old mansion. The 1885 house was one of the oldest in Dover and had been empty for the past dozen years. Thanks to an anonymous benefactor, the building, along with money for restoration, books and staff, had been donated to the town to replace the library, which had burned down five years ago.

Shaw had won the contract. It had meant not only a financial boon to his new construction business, but a huge boost to his reputation. After leaving LC Construction a year ago and starting his own company, McKinney Construction, he'd made the classic new-bie mistake of overscheduling his projects. With the library job behind, he'd had to pull back on his other jobs because if this one wasn't done on time, he'd have to pay a hefty fine to the benefactor's foundation, one that could mean the end of his fledgling business. Shaw had factored in time for unexpected problems, but the old house had coughed up more than he'd bargained for.

"So, are they coming or not?"

"Not." Shaw faced his foreman and longtime mentor, Russ Franklin. The older man was the biggest asset to Shaw's start-up construction company. Skilled, experienced and dedicated, Russ had owned his own company in Alabama for years. When he had sold it, Shaw had convinced him to move to Dover to work with him. "Our drywall crew took another job. They couldn't wait on us any longer."

"That's going to put us further behind."

"How long would it take for you and me to do the work?" It was his last resort.

Russ frowned. "Too long. We're way too close to the deadline as it is. You want me to find us another crew?"

The knot in Shaw's chest, which had formed over the past few weeks, tightened. "Yeah. Call Laura Holbrook and see if she has a few guys we could use. Or maybe she knows of another contractor we can call. I've used up all my contacts."

Russ moved off to make the calls, and Shaw planted his hands on his tool belt and scanned the large room that would be the fiction section of the new Dover Library. It would take several days to put up drywall, then tape, float and sand before they could paint. Days lost when other crews couldn't work.

When Russ returned, his expression was grim.

"Laura doesn't have anyone to spare at the moment, and she doesn't know any other crews that are available."

Shaw rubbed his jaw. He couldn't handle another delay. Dover had been without a library for a long time, unable to afford a new one. The donation had been a blessing to the small town and generated huge excitement from the residents. The people here had given him a home and a fresh start. He wasn't about to let them down. Even if he had to work around the clock to get the job done.

His cell rang and he yanked it out of his pocket, frowning when he saw the name on the screen. Dover police. "Hello." He listened as the officer explained the situation. Shaw rubbed his forehead and nodded. "Yeah. I know her. I'll be right there." He hung up, his chest constricted so tightly he had trouble breathing. The last thing he needed was another complication in his life. And Lainie Hollings was a giant one.

Hearing her name had unleashed a landslide of painful memories and a heavy dose of guilt. He'd started to deny knowing her. It would do neither one of them any good to meet again. But when the officer had told him she'd been robbed, Shaw couldn't ignore her plight. Lainie was a widow because of his carelessness.

A death he could have prevented. He'd double- and triple-checked her husband's safety harness on the roof that day, only to find he'd loosened the straps again. Irritated with Hollings's cavalier attitude, Shaw had failed to check again, and Hollings had fallen from the roof. Lainie blamed him for her husband's death. Shaw accepted his part in the accident. He should have checked again. A dozen times if necessary. But he hadn't.

"Everything okay, boss?"

Shaw looked at his foreman. Right now, nothing was okay. "I've got to leave. I might not be back today. Keep looking for a crew and check on the remodel on Corey Road. If we can get that job done, we can list it."

Russ nodded. "And what about the Hanson remodel?"

Another problem to add to the pile. "I'll have to push them back again." Russ frowned and Shaw held up a hand to halt the comment he knew was coming. The Hansons were beyond irritated. If he didn't find a way to soothe their ruffled feathers, it could get ugly. But that was the least of his worries now.

Shaw climbed into his truck and cranked the engine, trying to figure out how he'd face Lainie Hollings. What did you say to the wife of the man you killed?

The moment he stepped inside the police station, his attention was drawn to the dark-haired woman seated in the waiting area. His stopped in his tracks, his heart racing, the blood roaring through his ears. She was even lovelier than she'd been when he'd first seen her. That moment was indelibly etched in his mind. She'd come to the job site to bring her husband his lunch. They'd laughed and talked and shared little touches, and Shaw's heart had grown envious.

Lainie had caught him watching her, and he'd felt a jolt like an electrical charge through his system. She was the prettiest woman he'd ever seen. She'd looked away and that's when the shame had tightened his throat. What was wrong with him? Admiring the wife of the man he was training was detestable. Shaw had gone back to work and vowed to keep his attraction in check.

Realizing he was still standing in the doorway, Shaw squared his shoulders and stepped forward. Lainie was hunched in her seat watching two little girls as they scribbled on paper. Her dark brown hair was shorter now, falling in a sleek line to her shoulders. She glanced at him. In that moment, he noticed the sparkle was missing from her big brown eyes. Instead, he saw fear and anxiety. She looked fragile and alone. He was hit with a strong desire to pull her close and comfort her, but he didn't have the right. All he could do was offer his help. His attraction had no place in this situation.

The door to the police station swooshed open again, but Lainie didn't bother to look.

Shaw wasn't coming. She'd have to find help someplace else. Heavy footsteps on the floor drew her attention, and she looked up to see a tall, dark-haired man. He was dressed in faded jeans and a dark T-shirt with a company logo that hugged his torso in an interesting way. His sturdy, tan work boots thumped the floor as he strode toward them with a confident swagger. She started to look away only to realize who the man was. Shaw McKinney.

She didn't remember him looking like this. He was taller, more imposing than she remembered. His shoulders were wide enough to carry the world. Her inspection moved to his ruggedly handsome face. Navy blue eyes. Deep lines in his cheeks. His sharply angled jaw was softened by firm lips and a dimple in the center of his chin. A flicker of appreciation darted along her nerves, squelched instantly with humiliation. How Shaw McKinney looked had nothing to do with the kind of man he was. His actions had cost her everything.

His eyes bored into her as he came closer, and there was a grim set to his jaw. Her hopes faded. He wasn't any happier to see her than she was to see him. She shouldn't have called him. Asking for his help was a betrayal of her husband's memory. Natalie looked up at her with a sweet little smile, reminding her that she had to think of the girls first. She forced the nausea aside and raised her chin, clasping her trembling hands in her lap.

"Lainie, are you all right?" He glanced at her then down at the girls, his forehead creasing in a deep frown.

Stupid question. No, she wasn't all right. She stood. "I'm fine. Thank you for coming. I'm sorry to bother you, but there was no one else to call."

"You did the right thing." He motioned her to be seated.

Shaw stared at the girls, a shadow seeming to pass behind his eyes. Was he feeling guilty? Good.

Her conscience pricked, but she ignored it, sinking into the chair as her knees began to fail.

A Great Romance Filled with Conflict and Characters to Root For
By Julie Arduini
I really enjoyed this book because it took an interesting plot and ran with it. Lainie is a widow with two young daughters trying to make a fresh start. She's barely made it to the town line before trouble starts and it doesn't let up. Everything that can come against her does. The hardest thing? The man Lainie feels is responsible for her husband's death is the only one available to help her. That sets up immediate conflict and I loved that.

I also loved the conflict. As an author I've learned our job is to give each scene, each chapter an action and reaction. Keep the conflict. Raise the stakes. Bachelor to the Rescue is a great model of how this is done.
By the end of the book I felt like I knew Lainie, Shaw, the girls and the townspeople. It was a fast read and a very satisfying one. Bachelor to the Rescue belongs in your beach bag for your summer reading.

I received Bachelor to the Rescue from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A story forgiveness, commitment and love.
By PennyMindingMom
Love Inspired® books are faith-based books that are filled with wholesome stories and values, unlike so many of the romance novels that grace the store shelves today. Each book will inspire your heart and nourish your soul as they focus on faith, hope and love.

Each month six new Love Inspired® books become available both in-store and online. Buy one or buy all six, you won’t be disappointed.

Lainie Hollings, a widowed mom of 2 girls, has been robbed and in order to protect her daughters she must accept help from Shaw McKinney . Lainie and Shaw both share a hurtful past, a past neither one believes they can get over. God has different plans. Plans of forgiveness, commitment and most of all love.

I was taken to a small town of Dover where I felt I was there watching Shaw and Lainie wrestle with their personal struggles of acceptance, humility and forgiveness. There were a few times where I found myself giggling over sweet embraces between these two.

I loved the characters, even Millie. My first thought of her was that she was a snotty bitty, but by the end of the book I loved her. There were a few unexpected surprises and of course though it all I was wondering “How is this going to end?” or “What is God going to do next.”

Great Read.

I received a complimentary copy of "Bachelor to the Rescue" in exchange for this honest review, I was not compensated for this review.

Love, forgiveness, and 2 little girls...
By J. Augustine
I had all six of the May Love Inspired contemporary releases sitting in front me. All equally good books but I had to start somewhere so I chose one at random. I'm glad I picked Bachelor To The Rescue first, it's about a librarian and the Friends of the Library play a big part in some important scenes. Now, I love librarians but I am also a Friend of the Library so this book was a little extra special.

Lorraine Beatty has written a sweet romantic tale of love, forgiveness, and moving on. Tragedy binds Lainie and Shaw, circumstance brings them together. Forgiveness can mean the world to them both.

Sweet story, perfect for an evening when you want a light read with a happy ending. Read Bachelor To The Rescue to find out what happens when you mix two little girls, a willing dog, a princess club, and a guy who can't say no...

(I received a copy of this book from FlyBy Promotions in exchange for my review. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, by Edward S. Herman, Noam Chomsky

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Based on a series of case studies—including the media’s dichotomous treatment of “worthy” versus “unworthy” victims, “legitimizing” and “meaningless” Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the U.S. wars against Indochina—Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media’s behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications. These include the manner in which the media covered the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and subsequent Mexican financial meltdown of 1994-1995, the media’s handling of the protests against the World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund in 1999 and 2000, and the media’s treatment of the chemical industry and its regulation. What emerges from this work is a powerful assessment of how propagandistic the U.S. mass media are, how they systematically fail to live up to their self-image as providers of the kind of information that people need to make sense of the world, and how we can understand their function in a radically new way.

Amazon.com Review
An absolutely brilliant analysis of the ways in which individuals and organizations of the media are influenced to shape the social agendas of knowledge and, therefore, belief. Contrary to the popular conception of members of the press as hard-bitten realists doggedly pursuing unpopular truths, Herman and Chomsky prove conclusively that the free-market economics model of media leads inevitably to normative and narrow reporting. Whether or not you've seen the eye-opening movie, buy this book, and you will be a far more knowledgeable person and much less prone to having your beliefs manipulated as easily as the press.

From Publishers Weekly
Herman of Wharton and Chomsky of MIT lucidly document their argument that America's government and its corporate giants exercise control over what we read, see and hear. The authors identify the forces that they contend make the national media propagandisticthe major three being the motivation for profit through ad revenue, the media's close links to and often ownership by corporations, and their acceptance of information from biased sources. In five case studies, the writers show how TV, newspapers and radio distort world events. For example, the authors maintain that "it would have been very difficult for the Guatemalan government to murder tens of thousands over the past decade if the U.S. press had provided the kind of coverage they gave to the difficulties of Andrei Sakharov or the murder of Jerzy Popieluszko in Poland." Such allegations would be routine were it not for the excellent research behind this book's controversial charges. Extensive evidence is calmly presented, and in the end an indictment against the guardians of our freedoms is substantiated. A disturbing picture emerges of a news system that panders to the interests of America's privileged and neglects its duties when the concerns of minority groups and the underclass are at stake. First serial to the Progressive.

You Will Never Read The News The Same Way Again
By Keyan Zameni
This book is among the most enlightening, witty, effective and well-researched books I have ever read. There are 191 citations in a single chapter. It uses scientific measures such as number of inches a paper devotes to a subject (such as a client state's genocide vs. a communist or enemy states killings) across all time in their newspaper, or how many times it uses the word genocide to describe such killings. It clearly shows beyond shadow of doubt just how bias it is. It's hard to disagree with numbers.

If you're looking for an easy to confirm fact-finding mission on our media propaganda system, look here first. It absolutely blasts our media's failings and blatant serving as a mouthpiece for our government, writing uncritically whatever it says lest they compromise their #1 source for news to their readers. If you seek to rise above the mindless propaganda, find its origins, and learn to avoid falling victim to it, you absolutely must have this book.

Manufacturing the news...
By John P. Jones III
I once wrote an article which was eventually published in the local newspaper with the subject title. It concerned my interactions with NY Times columnist, Tom Friedman, and how the "balanced" statement which I have made to him was transformed, through his unique alchemy, into a very one-sided statement that fit his pre-conceived ideas, and was published in one of his columns to reinforce those ideas. Yes, I was "misquoted," in concept, if not in fact. But my interest in the subject of what becomes news, and what does not, predated the above interaction by many years. Regrettably, it was only recently when I purchased and read this book. The central theme is an examination of what and how the news in made, particularly in the United States, and just as importantly, what is omitted (left on the cutting room floor, as the movie industry has it.)

This book was first published in the late `80's, and this edition contains a 36 page introduction which was written in 2002. Herman and Chomsky are listed as co-authors, and I struggled with the question of which one wrote more of the book: I believe it was Edward Herman. The book has numerous strengths. Remember that it was written long before the era of the purported "fair and balanced" reporting of Fox News, and therefore addressing the truly "low-hanging fruit" of Fox's biased coverage is not included. Much of the book looks at what we refer to as our "newspaper of record," the New York Times. Their thesis is rather provocative: much of our "news" should be viewed as propaganda, just as we KNOW the "news" issued by various totalitarian regimes is propaganda. To test this thesis, they utilize a method that involves establishing what they call dichotomies: observe how a single event is reported in at least two disparate news sources, one usually outside the United States; the other is to observe the reporting on largely similar events, but one event occurs to a population deemed "hostile" to the United States, the other event occurs to a "friendly" nation. There is an entire chapter on "worthy" and "unworthy" victims.

The analysis is performed on events that occur in the `60's, `70's and `80's, and frankly some of the events had slipped off my "memory radar" (if it was ever there in the first place!); other events I intensely remember, in part, due to my personal participation. As one example that the authors examine in detail is the treatment of the murder of Jerzy Popieluszko, a Polish priest, and that is juxtaposed with the murder of Archbishop Romero, as well that of four American nuns in El Salvador. Replete with extensive tables that document the coverage, the murder of a Polish priest received many times more coverage, since it occurred in a country that America, at the time, viewed as "hostile," (since it was part of the Soviet bloc), whereas the murder, even of Americans, in an American client state was downplayed. Numerous other examples were also provided, including the shooting down of a civilian airliner by Israel, and how that was juxtaposed with the same incident done by the Soviet Union. Examination of the news from elections in Nicaragua (hostile) and Guatemala (friendly) were likewise compared. Another entire chapter involved the completion fabrication of a KGB-Bulgarian connection behind the attempted assassination of the Pope by a right-wing Turkish fanatic (I had completely forgotten about this incident... in terms of sheer fabrication, it is an important one to remember.)

The last third of the book, or so, detailed media coverage of the American wars in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Most of the analysis I felt was correct, and corresponded to the recollections of my own participation. However there was one glaring mistake, on page 183, where the authors claimed: "From January 1965, the United States employed Korean mercenaries, some 300,000 in all, who carried out brutal atrocities in the South." (Note: throughout most of the war the Koreans only had one division of troops, some 7,000 or so, the ROK "Tiger" division. It operated in Binh Dinh province, where I was). Furthermore, for 20 pages or so, the author, or authors appeared to have a running feud with author William Shawcross, of Sideshow Kissinger, Nixon, and The Destruction of Cambodia and other books. After reading these pages, it was still unclear to me what the feud was all about; certainly, overall, they seemed to be making much the same points, and Shawcross's book on Cambodia remains an essential read on that war. I also thought comments about Senator Eugene McCarthy were somewhat churlish.

Overall, even with the passage of time (or perhaps because this book has withstood the passage of time, as is even more true today, in the era of Fox News), this is a very important read for one interested in the "food chain" of how we are fed the news. Please overlook some of the flaws. 4-stars.

If you watch or read news in the United States, you will think differently about the content you are consuming after you finish this book. It is a must read for anyone concerned about large media companies deciding our content for us. With that said, it was written a while ago, and now with the proliferation of blogs, there are many more choices of content to consume, although they are not any less biased.

Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommelier's Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food, by Evan Goldstein

As thousands of wines from around the globe enter the marketplace and the American palate continues to adopt flavors from a range of cultures, the task of pairing wine and food becomes increasingly complicated. No longer is the choice simply red or white, or wines from California, France, or Italy. The typical shopper today has access to wines from those regions plus South Africa, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia. If that isn’t confusing enough, Asian, Latin American, and Creole dishes might find their way onto the same table. Perfect Pairings, by well-known Master Sommelier and respected restaurant industry veteran Evan Goldstein, provides straightforward, practical advice for choosing the right bottle for each meal. The quintessential resource for matching wine and food, this book includes 58 companion recipes developed by celebrated chef Joyce Goldstein that showcase each type of wine.

Perfect Pairings combines in-depth explorations of twelve grape varietals, sparkling wines, and dessert wines with guidance about foods that enhance the wide range of styles for each varietal. Whether the Chardonnay is earthy and flinty; rich, buttery, and oak-infused; fruity and tropical; or aged and mature, Goldstein explains how to match it with dishes that will make the wine sing. His clear, educational, and entertaining approach towards intimidating gastronomical questions provides information for all readers, professional and amateur alike.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldstein, a James Beard Award–winning sommelier and author of Five Star Service, tackles the tricky task of pairing wine with food. His practical guide for learning about the different styles of wines (varietals) encourages experimentation and offers hints on how to taste with discernment. Comprehensive chapters on 12 common varietals and sections on sparkling and dessert wines contain the most pertinent facts: regions, top producers, key flavors to look for and ideas for food pairings. Goldstein's mother, Joyce, a noted chef and cookbook author (The Mediterranean Kitchen) shares complementary recipes for simple yet flavorful dishes. Sample menus suggest, for instance, pairing an austere merlot with Tuna with Rosemary and Citrus Tapenade; or an aged, developed syrah with Korean Short Ribs. A thorough glossary of everyday wine terms rounds out a useful primer for those who like wine but don't have extensive knowledge of the subject. 16 color photos. (May)

A Marvelous Book
By Books R Us
I'm writing this minutes after a sublime experience, drinking Evan Goldstein's recommended fruit-forward Pinot Noir with Joyce Goldstein's incredibly good recipe for Pork Loin Glazed with Pomegranate and Orange. I actually Googled Evan's name because I wanted to send him some fan e-mail -- alas, couldn't find an address. So the least I can do is give the book an excellent review. I learned more about pairing wine and food in the book's first chapter than I have after years of subscribing to wine publications. Two thumbs up!

Great on content, poor on photos
By Foothills Reader
If you don't care that much about photos with recipes, this book is excellent on text. There is a photo section in the middle but personally I like to see at least half of the cookbook with accompanying photos. I gave this as a first anniversary gift to my son and daughter-in-law because they enjoy both wines and foods. She liked it a lot for the information about how to combine dishes and also the sections on history of the wines/regions. It is weak on information about American wines and in some cases it might be difficult to find some of the foreign wines mentioned. I would probably use it more as a reference book than a standard cookbook.

I wish that I could have the knowledge of this book by osmosis. To read Evan's insightful comments about a wine, then to read suggestions on food pairings with that wine, is a delight. Additionally, Joyce's ample recipes, some simple, some complex, are well chosen, and a strong plus for adventuresome cooks to buy this book.

This was my favorite pairing book (and there's several books out there!) till recently.

When I saw a copy of "What to Drink with What You Eat: The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food with Wine...by Andrew Dornenburg, I realized that Dorenberg had "one-upped" this good text in different ways. One can find the food type, or the dominant spicing or saucing, then work backwards to the wines that are better suited. This is a more intuitive way for most people not well versed in different wines, and is better for me, as I need to match a wine to a fish's sauce more than to the fish. Still it does not diminish my appreciation for Perfect Pairing one bit. Evan Goldstein's Perfect Pairings does acknowledge this importance as well on pages 22-23 and 26-7, however many readers may gloss over this. The book is not as well geared as Dorenberg's in my opinion, for things such as spicy or some Asian or other ethnic foods, your mileage may vary.

Additionally, Dorenberg's book expands one's options with a food to go beyond wine for pairings, to include spirits, beer, etc. This makes more sense, as I just love a good beer with some things (some Asian food, German foods, etc.) that just don't work as well with recommended wines. The drawback (or plus, to some) to Dorenburg's book is that it isn't a text as Goldstein's. Dorenburg's book, after a few brief text chapters, is an extensive alphabetical listing of numerous foods and beverages, followed by their matches, with no explanation present, or felt needed.

I like Goldstein's Perfect Pairings dessert/dessert wine chapter, for example, having a sweet tooth. This section gives a good overview of different wines (late harvest, fortified, sparkling), and then separately talks about tree/stone fruit desserts, creamy and custard desserts, nut and dried-frut desserts, and finally the chocolatee, coffee, and caramel desserts..and recommends appropriate wines for each dessert classification.

Glance through both wine pairing books, and see which book style suits your needs best. I enjoy aspects of both, for different reasons, and appreciate each for it's strengths.

A Trio of My Father's Tales, by Judith Cullen

The newest addition to the Trio Tales short story series is a tribute to fathers, containing three stories based on family tales repeated around the kitchen table during the author’s childhood, where all great family legends are born. In "The Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit" a young boy in 1898 Chicago struggles between peer pressure at school, and his determination to make his immigrant parents proud of him. Can he find a solution to make everyone happy? In "Flying Down to Couer D'Alene," and "The Skunk War" the scene moves west to life stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In these two individual tales, the rigor of Army life meets the ebb and flow of different men from all over the country, different concepts of authority, and what it really takes to be a leader. “Ms. Cullen's writing is lyrical and touching, the rhythms and characters stick in your mind like a really good tune. I have the feeling she could write about tin cans and readers would come away with a sense of satisfaction and wonder.” ~ Reader Review, "A Trio of Cat Tales" "Stories as well written as this have a way of opening windows…" ~ Reader Review, "A Trio of Irish Tales" "Ms. Cullen has a gift for storytelling.” ~ Reader Review, "A Trio of Irish Tales"

Beautifully Expressed

I love how the author could take her father's tales and create complete and evocative environments and characters. Her storytelling is full of respect to her father's history while also finding and enhancing the humor and emotion in each tale. A lovely, lovely read.

Excellent lessons in this one!
By Chief, USN Ret...VT Town
Each one of these three stories contains a learning lesson. Two of them were military in nature so I felt more at home with both of those.

The first is a story of a small child whose mother made him a wonderful suit for school. You can imagine what the other students thought about him and his suit. Excellent ending to this one. Kevin, bless his heart, didn't want to disappoint his mom.

The second is about a military convoy on its way to Yakima, Washington. This one tells about a man Riggs, from Alabama, that loves to read. He is one of a family of 19 children and from a share-cropping family. He decided to join the Army so he could better himself. The center of attention in this one, however, is his LT. Nice twist at the ending.

And, the final one - last but not least - is another military story. This is about two teams, the Red and the Blue, trying to capture the flag of the other to become victorious. Don't fight mother nature when you are in the woods. Excellent..

I was trying to pick my favorite but am unable as all of them resonated with me.

Highly recommended.

Heartwarming!
By Opinionated
Did your Dad tell stories? Mine did and so does every Dad worthy of the name. These are delightful re-tellings of one Dad's stories, obviously listened to with attention and love. My one regret is that there are only three of them. I'm sure he had more stories than that! I hope she'll share more of them.
