Classic Steals My Heart

Sheila Burnford has taken us on our own Incredible Journey, one that rivals the epic adventures the character's in the story plough on through. 'The Incredible Journey' is about an old dog, a strong Labrador and a tricky cat,who join together and walk the length of Canada, just to reach the house in which their owners live.
It is a very imaginative piece, with that good old classic writing style, and the wit and humour that you look for in any kind of book. By the time you have finished you will be thinking, "MORE, MORE, MORE!!!"
'The Incredible Journey' has just taken me on a special ride. Why don't you come too?

Kids will like it more

I saw this book in one of those take-one-leave-one libraries. I thought "I wonder if Homeward Bound was based on this book?" so I picked it up. Turns out it was. Well, the original movie was based off this book and the 90s remake was based off the first film. I had vague memories of the movie - I think I'd only seen it once, long ago, so I can't really tell you how they compare.

The animals don't talk in the book - I actually rather expected it to feel similar to 101 Dalmatians, but it was decidedly different. The breeds are different. The backstory is different, but I think their perils were similar. Not very sure. Vague memories and all, but that doesn't really matter anyway.

The story was inspired by true events, that weren't really anything like the story. The true events were more of a catalyst in the author's mind. And that's ok. It's a quick and easy read that you don't really get invested in as a reader. As an adult, the story was mildly interesting, but I bet as a kid I would've been totally into it, wondering what was going to happen to them.

This is a book I'll be hanging on to for when my kids get older. A clean book, full of perils, sadness, devotion, and chutzpah. What's not for kids to love?

This book was not originally targeted at children, though I believe that's where the appeal will lie, so it just gets 3 stars. If it was directed to children I'd bump it up another star.

Far and away the best book on DSP I've read. AoE for DSP: friendly writing, absolutely geared towards giving a feel for the material. Thorough heuristic walkthroughs followed by mathematical analysis, with plenty of fully worked-out examples and lots of space devoted to diagrams and graphs. Math is handled very logically and fully worked out so it's easy to follow.

Good, but with some editorial issues

The book has some editorial issues, but it's still an exhaustive and comprehensive book on the subject of SS7.

The editorial issues appear to be sections that need updating. For instance, portions of the first chapter are very dated, and no longer apply in 2014. For instance, on page 33, the author writes about "PCS" as if it were still the late 1990s. Carriers have now started using their PCS 1900 MHz spectrum for LTE. Also, on page 28, the author writes, "...[there] are many obstacles to supporting Internet access on wireless phones. The bandwidth required to support Web access is not yet available in North America (although Japan and many other countries are already enjoying this level of access)." This was the case as recently as several years ago when we had feature phones with WAP browsers, but no longer applies in 2014 when we have 100 Mbps LTE networks and smart phones and tablets with fully-functional browsers like Chrome and Safari.

If you want to learn SS7, and you're willing to overlook some issues with dated content, then this is still a good book.
