Great purchase

I purchased this book Used in Good condition and it was well worth the money. I only paid $35 for it. There was VERY LITTLE wear on the cover and the inside pages are in new like condition. As far as the text, it seems like a good Physiology book, though it's the first time I've ever bought a Physiology book so I have nothing to compare it to. Just looking through it, though, it seems like a great reference text book and I plan to keep it after my class is finished.
To conclude, it seems like a good source for studying. It came within about a week after I ordered it. It was in great condition. The price was fair. I give it 5 stars!

More helpful to me than Pragmatic Programmers book

I've read both this book and Agile Web Development with Rails published by Pragmatic Programmers. Although this book has more errors, I found it to be easier to follow along with and the examples to be more practical. Agile Web Development uses an e-commerce catalog as the sample web app whereas this book uses a digg clone - more practical to developers today I think. Here are some other reasons why I prefer this book:
- Agile Web Development has you create the example web application first and then tells you how the Rails framework works. This book teaches you how the framework works while you're building the sample web app.
- Agile has a single chapter on testing whereas this book has you write tests as you go, which is what you would do when you actually develop an application.
- It has a chapter on debugging (although it has been updated). This is an important topic I think but is hardly covered in Agile Web Development.
- This book introduced me to two helpful programs - Mysql Query Browser and the Rails Console script and did so early in the book so that you can use them while you're developing the sample app. Once I learned about the Rails Console, I started using it all the time as it allows you to interact with your application from a command line and is a great tool for seeing how different objects interact with each other.

pretty good for a new ruby on rails programmer

I picked this up to try and learn some ror programming. I've worked through all the examples once and have a pretty good feel on how ror is put together. I would say this is a good beginners book. If you decide to use this, be sure to get the errata pages from the publisher before you tear your hair out because an example doesn't work. Now that I've gone through this book, I need to find a good ror reference manual as this one is not designed for this use.

Good but not up to date

This is a clear tutorial, but recent changes to Ruby and Rails mean you *must* make sure you are using the version of Ruby & Rails the book specifies, or the samples will not work.

To be fair, the author does point this out - but it would be nice to have a tutorial that works with the most recent versions of R&R.

Other than that, it's a fine text/tutorial.

WHIP IT GOOD!

This is a benchmark book on the subject by the late Charles Gruzanski. The use of a short chain with weighted ends employed by a trained practitioner can be deadly effective against an unarmed opponent, which this book will show.

This book covers the art and science of the Japanese weapons fighting forms and employment of the short-chain and Shuriken. In the book the vital spots of the body are meticulously delineated, and the basic combat use of the chain is taught in graphic, easy to understand photographs and text. The proper methods of perforating your target with throwing darts/Shurikens are explained in detail. As well as how to construct your own "tools" of the trade. For the practicality of these techniques for the combatant is were these techniques fall short. As both methods require time, training and experience to get skilled, to be of any practical use in the short term. But it is somewhat entertaining training.

Overall this book has limited information of value for the combatant. But is ideal for the novice and advanced pupil of martial arts.

FASCINATING BOOK

Don't be fooled by the title. The publisher simply added the word "ninja" to help sell more copies. This is an interesting look at two ancient and obscure martial art weapons; the manriki chain (a two foot long chain with weights on each end), and the spike (similar to throwing knives).
But let's get the history straight. Dating back maybe a thousand years, different versions of these weapons first originated in Shaolin China -- then later were copied by the Japanese samurai -- and eventually ended up in the hands of a few ninja clans. Just giving credit where credit is due.
This book helps keep these two weapons alive. Spikes & chains are quite deadly in their application...including to an unskilled user. Be warned! Today, they are outlawed by the majority of police departments worldwide, and getting caught carrying these around will land you behind bars.

Excellent older book, but new title is pandering

This is the book which was once known as "Spike and Chain". When I was in the 8th grade I discovered that the principle of "kani-me" (crab's eye) as described in the shuriken-jutsu section was very effective in improving my dart scores. I am disappointed however that the author has added the word "ninja" to the title to capitalize on the public's fascination with these rather unsavory characters.

An explosion of color. Now this is the kind of quilt book that I like,lots of pictures, and very few words. The quilts speak for their-selves.

A truly inspiring book

I have taken classes from Gwen for over 25 years, yet the quilt on page 7 still blew me away. By the time I got to the last page I had dozens of inspirations for my next dozen quilts. Thank you Martingale for publishing this wonderful collection of the work by an amazing quilter and a wonderful person. Thank you Gwen for being such a great inspiration for me being true to my own style in quilting. I love drawing out what I want to do, love the challenge of figuring out how to do it, and the freedom to change my mind along the way is the best. The quality of this book is the highest and the photography is perfect. This quote from the book is what I aspire to: making quilts that are "unstudied, unpretentious, and more interesting, not to mention less stressful and more fun to make." The book is everything I thought it would be times five.

They divorce after Kate discovers the skeleton in the Burnett family closet.

This book is a wonderful read! It has two wonderful story lines that will break your heart. T.T. Johnson makes you feel like you know each and every character! Loved this book and anxiously await to read more!
