Farmer provides a tool for those interested in American Politics in general and American conservatism in particular with a tool that helps explain the historical development of American ideological conservatism, both in a theoretical sense, and in a policy sense, and thus draws a connection between the American past and what must be considered an exceptional conservative American administration, even by American standards, under George W. Bush. Farmer illustrates that the basic ideological underpinnings that have driven the Bush administration that have generally been viewed by Europeans as exceptional, have been present in American politics since its earliest colonial beginnings with the Puritans and been carried forward by the ideological descendants of the Puritans from that time through the present. In essence, the form of American conservative exceptionalism exhibited during the Bush administration was present in American politics from the very beginning and has continued through the present, albeit in a more extreme form since the traditional ideological conservatives currently dominate all three branches of the American government and the terror attacks of 9/11 allowed them to garner popular support for their exceptional programs. 'The remarkable electoral record of the Conservative Party in the Twentieth Century has not been matched by a corresponding level of academic interest. This relative neglect has left important gaps in our knowledge of post-war British political history. For example, the governments of Harold Macmillan and Alec Douglas-Home (1957-64) are often misunderstood. Popular memories of this period are dominated by the Profumo Affair and the satire boom of the early 1960s, which gave the impression of a Conservative Party which was out of touch with social change. Stuart Mitchell's important study will help to revise this dominant impression. Drawing on all the main primary sources, he shows that the Conservatives were accutely aware of the challenges of modernity. Indeed, many of their problems arose from their various attempts to adapt to social and economic change. Mitchell presents an engrossing account of the struggle between 'modernisers' and more traditional figures within the party. Brian Farmer received his Ph.D. in political science from Texas Tech University and has been teaching political science and history at the collegiate level since 1991. Amazing and Wonderful Book!

Having personally been close friends with Ingo Swann for many, many years, I can say that he is a most amazing man! I helped to proof read the 'Secrets of Power' books One & Two and his powerful book 'Reality Boxes and Other Black Holes in Human Consciousness'. They are all incredible and wonderful books! Ingo is a scientist and a metaphysical genius and I am honored to know him. I recommend all of his books for study and for people to just reread the 'Secrets of Power' books volumes One and Two and his book 'Reality Boxes and Other Black Holes in Human Consciousness' when possible. Ingo has told me in the past that to truly retain the information in a book, that it is important to read the book three times...once to yourself in a whisper or low voice and two times to yourself. The brain captures the information clearly and retains the memory easier. An old metaphysical method I recall from the 1970's is as we read a book, we may want to try reading the book in three ways per page. Once to yourself, then repeat in a low or whispered voice, and again to yourself, but while focussing clearly on the words you are reading, which helps to get a mental picture of the pages as you read them. Also, people can gain intuitive information by having a book near them as they sleep. Ingo Swann is on the planet at this time for a reason and his insights and intuitive information is staggering! He is the father of 'Remote Viewing' and coined the name for the original studies. No one on the planet surpasses his accuracy in 'Remote Viewing' either. Just intuitively 'tune into' Ingo and his name, or look at any photograph of him and you may understand what I am saying. He is a gifted Master Visionary, a most incredibly Cosmic man and a fine Inspirational artist. May your intuition guide you always on your path to joy, truth, wisdom and understanding. Great book for learning about anything

Ingo Swann writes in a style I appreciate. He builds his case or argument from the bottom-up, defines terms and even tracks the history of words to ensure one gets the meaning. All this makes for effective communication. Most authors of "non-fiction" can't even manage that, precisely because they are caught by the same reality boxes as their readers.
This book is a part of a loose series and breaks the concept of reality boxes down into chunks, all in aid of helping the reader understand how this phenomena affects all of us. This understanding is meant to take along as a basis for getting the net book in the series.
One would probably have to start the series at the beginning to get the most out of this book, but the book is self-contained.
All books in the "Secrets f Power" series are recommended, but only for those who really want to know.

It does indeed provide the reader with the knowledge to influence behavior in children and adults with disabilities and/or challenging behavior.

On a winter day in 1892, in the broad daylight of downtown Memphis, Tennessee, a middle class woman named Alice Mitchell slashed the throat of her lover, Freda Ward, killing her instantly. Local, national, and international newspapers, medical and scientific publications, and popular fiction writers all clamored to cover the ensuing “girl lovers” murder trial. Lisa Duggan locates in this sensationalized event the emergence of the lesbian in U.S. mass culture and shows how newly “modern” notions of normality and morality that arose from such cases still haunt and distort lesbian and gay politics to the present day.
Situating this story alongside simultaneously circulating lynching narratives (and its resistant versions, such as those of Memphis antilynching activist Ida B. Wells) Duggan reveals how stories of sex and violence were crucial to the development of American modernity. While careful to point out the differences between the public reigns of terror that led to many lynchings and the rarer instances of the murder of one woman by another privately motivated woman, Duggan asserts that dominant versions of both sets of stories contributed to the marginalization of African Americans and women while solidifying a distinctly white, male, heterosexual form of American citizenship. Having explored the role of turn-of-the-century print media—and in particular their tendency toward sensationalism—Duggan moves next to a review of sexology literature and to novels, most notably Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness. Sapphic Slashers concludes with two appendices, one of which presents a detailed summary of Ward’s murder, the trial, and Mitchell’s eventual institutionalization. The other presents transcriptions of letters exchanged between the two women prior to the crime.
Combining cultural history, feminist and queer theory, narrative analysis, and compelling storytelling, Sapphic Slashers provides the first history of the emergence of the lesbian in twentieth-century mass culture.
