Epic into Novel looks at Henry Fielding's adaptation of classical epic in the context of what he called the 'Trade of . . . authoring'. Fielding was always keen to stress that his novels were modelled on classical literature. Equally, he was fascinated by--and wrote at length about--the fact that they were objects to be consumed. He recognised that he wrote in an age when an author had to consider himself 'as one who keeps a public Ordinary, at which all persons are welcome for their Money.' In describing his work, he alludes both to Homeric epic and to contemporary cookery books.

This tension in Fielding's work has gone unexplored, a tension between his commitment to a classical tradition and his immersion in a print culture in which books were consumable commodities. This interest in the place of the ancients in a world of consumerism was inherited from the previous generation of satirists. The 'Scriblerians'--among them Jonathan Swift, John Gay, and Alexander Pope--repeatedly suggest in their work that classical values are at odds with modern tastes and appetites. Fielding, who had idolised these writers as a young man, developed many of their satiric routines in his own writing. But Fielding broke from the Swift, Gay, and Pope in creating a version of epic designed to appeal to modern consumers.

Henry Power provides new readings of works by Swift, Gay, and Pope, and of Fielding's major novels. He examines Fielding's engagement with various Scriblerian themes--primarily the consumption of literature, but also the professionalisation of scholarship, and the status of the author--and shows ultimately that Fielding broke with the Scriblerians in acknowledging and celebrating the influence of the marketplace on his work.

About the Author
Bijan Vasigh is professor of Economics and Finance in the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach Florida. Dr. Vasigh received a Ph.D. degree in Economics from the State University of New York and he has written and published many articles concerning the aviation industry. The articles have been published in numerous academic journals such as the Journal of Economics and Finance, Journal of Transportation Management, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports, Transportation Quarterly, Airport Business, Journal of Business and Economics, and Journal of Travel Research. Bijan is also author of leading aviation textbooks entitled An Introduction to Air Transport Economics: From Theory to Application and The Foundations of Airline Finance: Methodology and Practice.

Reza Taleghani is currently a Managing Director with J.P. Morgan Securities in New York where he has spent the majority of his career as an investment banker to the air transport sector. He also has a deep understanding of the operational aspects of the industry, having recently served as President and CEO of Sterling Airlines, a leading Scandinavian low cost carrier. His expertise in aircraft finance arises from his experience originating and structuring financings of transportation assets in the Securitized Products Group at J.P. Morgan, as well as operating a fleet of jet aircraft at Sterling. During his time at J.P. Morgan, he has also worked on mergers and acquisitions; initial public offerings; secured, unsecured and ECA-backed financing in the syndicated finance and capital markets; leveraged finance; restructuring; and risk management for airline and lessor clients in Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Mr. Taleghani holds dual AB degrees in History and Organizational Behavior and Management from Brown University. He received his JD and MBA from Villanova University.

Darryl Jenkins has over 30 years of aviation experience. Recent work includes extensive merger and acquisition experience at United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Previously, he was at GWU for fifteen years and served as director of the Aviation Institute and was the Director of the Graduate Certificate Program in Aviation Management from 2001 to 2003. He was visiting faculty at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 2004. As a consultant he has worked for the majority of the world s top fifty airlines. He is a regular commentator for the major media (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC) on aviation issues and is regularly quoted in the print media as well. He is a regular speaker at trade and other conferences and is the author of several books.

Gr 3-6-A compilation of 13 short folktales, many of them classics of the Filipino culture. Many of the themes are universal in nature. Tales of greed and laziness and their consequences, nature's ways, family love and loyalty, and humorous trickster tales are all included. Many of the selections have counterparts from other cultures. "The Deer and the Snail" is a "Tortoise and the Hare" variant, and children will recognize "The Prince's Bride" as "Beauty and the Beast" with a twist. Others are quite different, such as "Why Mosquitoes Buzz Around Our Ears," which is surprisingly unlike the well-known African tale. "The Battle of the Sea and Sky" is a particularly nice telling of the creation of the Philippine Islands. Each story is accompanied by de Leon's ink-and-watercolor illustrations. The artist has subtly paid tribute to the diversity of the islands by using a variety of styles in the costume, suggestive of the different regions. A lovely addition to folklore collections.

Liana Elena Fomula, born in the Philippines, is the proprietor of R&G Publications, a custom-publishing firm based in Manila. She is also a writer and editor specializing in juvenile and young-adult fiction. Fomulo has also worked as an editor and managing editor for a leading publisher of children's mass-market fiction.

Joanne De Leon is an award-winning illustrator who received her B.F.A. from University of Philippines. She currently works as a freelance book illustrator and graphic designer. Her illustrations have appeared in many children's books, including The Termite Queen and Other Classic Philippine Earth Tales and Tiger on the Wall.

Wonderful illustrations and retelling of classic tales

I bought this book for my cousin's daughter (who is half Filipino). The main reason I bought this gift was 1) I wanted to buy her a book and 2) I couldn't be sure if she already owned or would receive the same Dr. Seuss and Little Golden books everyone else tends to buy. This was a great choice, I didn't read through the book but I saw some stories I had heard before. Since she is sure to grow up hearing stories about Cinderella, etc. I hope she will also treasure these as part of her heritage as she grows up and when she is older.

Boring

I read the 2nd edition of GIA and enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. This edition is very disappointing. A few of the chapters were informative AND kept me interested, but the majority of the book was a review of previous gang studies (as a reader/reviewer has stated already) and burdensome to go through. If there was any current information (the statistics may have been current), I don't think it was worth reading the entire book just to locate current information on gang activity in the U.S. I'm using this book as a textbook for a class I am teaching (I assumed it would be similar the GIA 2nd edition), but I will definitely change books next semester. If I didn't gain anything from this book, I don't think my students will learn from it.

Nothing New

This is Huff's 3rd edition of the book. The first one published in 1990 included cutting-edge research and was really great!! The second edition was not as good (since it did not offer too much cutting-edge knowledge) but had some great informative studies. The third edition is by far, the worst. Most of the 18 chapters are literature reviews and offer nothing significant to our knowledge of gangs. If there is a 4th edition published, I hope to see qualitative or quantitative empirical research and by different authors NOT included in editions 1 through 3.
