Kaye provides a concise introduction to neurosurgery with good coverage of major topics. Chapters are short and enable the student to read while on rounds. Ideally, you would supplement the reading with a true text or original articles. Nevertheless, a good first start.

Excellent for Rotations

I read this book cover to cover before starting my Neurosurgery subinternship and it really gave me a great overview for the patients I saw in clinic and cases I scrubbed on. The text flows nicely and it is easy to get through in a couple days, yet detailed enough so you can sound intelligent when talking about the topics. Good illustrations too. I would say this is a good read before the rotation starts, and then I recommend Handbook of Neurosurgery while on the rotation for specific cases.

This book has exactly what it promises, the essentials. This reads more like a brief text book over view of topics rather than a how to like the Handbook of Neurosurgery does. It still has its place however as it has a great section in the beginning explaining imaging. It also has good info as far as mortality rates and the like for the conditions listed. It explains the topics (many of which were not covered in my PA program) in a way that any practitioner with a higher than novice level of medicine can understand.

A Continuance Of The Apprentice Story

Although this was to be a story of Tom as a spook I was left with a feeling that he was weaker than when we first met him on the farm. Instead of being the main character that he had been in the other books he should have been a supportive character with the women as the lead.

The ending was predictable and unless I'm greatly surprised I have a feeling I know what will happen in the first few chapters of the next book. I'm hopeful that this long story is leading to a surprise that I'm yet unaware. I have preordered the next book in hopes it is better than this one.

With all that said I would recommend the book. Over all it is an okay story. My suggestion is that when you read it not to expect the well written and thought out story lines of the other books.

Sofsky takes us from the searing, unforgettable image of the Muselmann--Auschwitz jargon for the "walking dead"--to chronicles of epidemics, terror punishments, selections, and torture.

The society of the camp was dominated by the S.S. and a system of graduated and forced collaboration which turned selected victims into accomplices of terror. Sofsky shows that the S.S. was not a rigid bureaucracy, but a system with ample room for autonomy. The S.S. demanded individual initiative of its members. Consequently, although they were not required to torment or murder prisoners, officers and guards often exploited their freedom to do so--in passing or on a whim, with cause, or without.

The order of terror described by Sofsky culminated in the organized murder of millions of European Jews and Gypsies in the death-factories of Auschwitz and Treblinka. By the end of this book, Sofsky shows that the German concentration camp system cannot be seen as a temporary lapse into barbarism. Instead, it must be conceived as a product of modern civilization, where institutionalized, state-run human cruelty became possible with or without the mobilizing feelings of hatred.

The Nazi concentration camps illustrate the Dostoevskian doctrine that where there is no God, everything is permitted. While the camps had many rules, there were no laws, and certainly no justice. In this lucidly translated volume, award-winning German sociologist Sofsky sets out to analyze the organization of dominance in the camps and concludes that they were places of "absolute power; not a means to an end, but an end in itself." Indifferently ruled by the SS, which delegated responsibility for the day-to-day running to prisoner-functionaries, the lagers were divided into classes, with German political prisoners at the top, and Jews, Poles, and Russians at the bottom. Whether beaten, worked to death or left to die of disease, their lives were worthless, and their pain meaningful only in the pleasure it provided to the torturers. They were nothing, so nothing done to them mattered. Sofsky emphasizes that the murderers, ordinary people who were suffused with a spirit of "camaraderie" and a faith that they wouldn't be punished, did more than was required. "They did what they were permitted to?and they were permitted to do everything." Despite Sofsky's vast and painstaking research, his admirable and horrifying book leaves the reader convinced that the Holocaust is not a subject for sociologists but for theologians. In it Sofsky (sociology, Univ. of Gottingen) utilizes a wide range of both primary and secondary sources to analyze how concentration camps were used by Germany to maintain absolute power over its victims based on terror, organization, and excessive violence. He does not attempt to explain how or why the Holocaust happened and for the most part focuses on the concentration camps rather than the extermination centers. A Sociological Look at the Nazi Concentration Camps

Wolfgang Sofsky's book is not a work of history, but of sociology. The author is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Gottingen, and it shows. He has written a fascinating, very worthwhile look at how human existence in a concentration camp affects how we interact with one another socially. He has entire chapters devoted to space, time, social structures and work. He examines how each affects and is affected by the concentration camp. He looks at how space and time were used in Dachau, Sachsenhausen, etc. For example, the higher your place in the camp hierarchy, the more space you had, such as in your living quarters. Also, the higher your social status in the camp, the more free time you had. Those at the bottom, the Jews, had no free time. He examines the existence of social structures within the camp, ie there was the SS at the top; then the kapos, the prisoners who were put in charge of other prisoners; the block leaders, and the average prisoners beneath them. At the bottom, treated the most inhumanely, were the Jews and the so-called Musselmen, prisoners who were so weak and sick that they were apathetic, unaware and physically almost dead. He shows that work was used in the German concentration camps, not for much productive purpose, but to hasten the death of the prisoners.
One of the most important things in this book is Sofsky's look at selections. When people were brought to Auschwitz and other death camps, they were selected for either death or residence in the camp. Those most fit for work were registered and brought to live in the camp, everyone else was killed. He claims 25.9% of those transported to Auschwitz were admitted to the camp and the rest were killed. My only problem with Sofsky is that his source for that figure is other books and articles by the likes of D. Czech and Raul Hilberg. Sofsky fails to reference exact documents in that regard.

Dense but Riveting

This is a powerful book. It analyzes and explains the sociology of the Nazi concentration camp.

I would, however, recommend reading it After reading other books about the camps in general, and survivor testimony in particular.

It is not light reading, but, I found it gripping nonetheless.

If you do not understand why this was such a big deal, read this book.

Of everything I have read about the Concentration Camps, this is the first thing that really gave me a feel of total horror at how they operated and what it did to the people that experienced the camps in any role. I have never appreciated the concentration of evil nearly as well as I did reading this book. War has many horrors, but even the horrors of other wars pale before this measure of evil. If you have any thoughts that the internment of Americans in American internment camps was in any way comparable, read this and realize that there is no comparison. What we did was a national disgrace, but it was nowhere near this concentrated, distilled, carefully crafted evil. Well researched, and written by a German as a warning against complacency, lest time make memories of the horror fade.

Shared Problem Solving

Connected compares the problems and inadequacies of today's youth with the difficulties prior-generation immigrant families faced, trying to fit into the culturally strange American social structure. It uses an old-country grandmother's anecdotal memories and previously overcome problems as guideposts for a thirteen year old boy trying to face the difficulties of school, bullying, and a dangerous circle of friends.

How many of today's youth learn from history and the past experiences of connected family to face their own obstacles and challenges? Most young people think that they face greater problems than their parents did and that they have to work things out on their own. This book challenges that notion and tries to guide youth toward leaning on lessons learned by their elders. The author's experiences of raising a family and working as a teacher serve her well to grasp the contrasting viewpoints of family matriarch, perplexed youth, and educational staff within two different generations of the same family. Their experiences are indeed connected.

She beautifully tells us about the immigrant's dream

"Connected: An American Homecoming"

This book is refreshing, especially when you contrast it with our daily news, which are full of reports on violence and terrorism.
Ms. De Nicolo takes a systemic view of relationships, describing various levels of interaction, i.e., the child, within the family, the family within the community, and the school, within the larger sociocultural context. She beautifully tells us about the immigrant's dream, but she goes beyond the dream to acknowledge the reciprocal nature of the immigrant's adaptation--what they receive from the larger culture as well as their contribution to the host society. This book also values the notion that bicultural lives are enriched both, because of the values they learned in their original country, as well as the new values they experience in the adoptive country.
The Family in her book is a strong family, who nurtures the children, but also teaches them to think by themselves. The grandmother's style of helping Vincent, who is dealing with bulling at school, is very positive, she first, asks him to think about what he wants to do with his problems, and what solutions come to mind. Her positive style of helping values the potential in Vincent to think about solutions by himself.
This book is very current, because it discusses acculturation and adaptation to the country of origin. --A current theme, especially for refugees, who are currently experiencing the dislocation of leaving their country for a new one. Immigrants have an advantage over refugees, in that they have been part of the decision to immigrate, and tend to hold in their mind the benevolent views of their country of origin, Refugees don't have that luxury, they leave in the middle of a crisis, and end up in emergent communities that vary in the degree of support they can provide.
Ms De Nicolo is a creative writer, she uses metaphor, inviting the reader to participate in defining the events, and emotions that the family encounters. I recommend this book because it presents many healing themes, within family relationships, and within children and schools. Books like this help children and families face the violence in the schools, not only bulling, but one would hope that it also helps to reduce the series of attacks that schools have faced in the last years.

A Passion for Being An American

This miniature epic follows an Italian family who immigrated to the United States soon after the twentieth century to pursue their American dream. The story unfolds through the monologues and conversations of the original immigrants and their progeny in the next three generations.

The grandmother is the story’s most compelling character. She is the one who encourages and inspires her daughter and grandson to embrace the American dream that beats in her own heart. She understands her children’s youthful impatience for a self-determination that does not come easily. She raises subjects children do not like talking about, such as feelings of being outcast, bullied and misunderstood. She resists the easier path of complying with her grandson as he struggles with his Italian American identity and exerts herself, instead, to guide him towards the self-assertion that America makes possible. The feeling of not being understood comes out in the characters’ speech patterns, sometimes broken English, elliptical teen talk, allegory, and metaphor.

"Connected: An American Homecoming" carries the strong theme that self-realization can only be achieved by confronting the challenges and difficulties of growing up and of being human. The monologues and conversations are intimate and laced with passion. ##
