SUCH a good guidebook! I had checked out 3 other guides from the library, and in my frustration, I bought this one and found that it was far and above easier to use, prettier to look at, and overall, more helpful that the other books I'd checked out (which include Frommers & Moon). Our trip planning jumped up a few notches on the easy scale after buying this book.

Warning; You May Not Like What You Hear.

I have been wanting to read this since I first heard of it. The book is a bit dated, the copyright date is 1975, but the basic premise is clearly laid out. It will be seen as too doctrinaire by many and many others may find the books main theme even offensive. The authors explore the basic background of U.F.O. sightings and look at various different aspects of what is happening according to mainstream scientific methods as well as the prevailing extraterrestrial hypothesis. The result is, not one theory can account for the bewildering array of events that have been reported, including ancient events and the "Great Airship Flap " of 1896-97. Their theory, U.F.O.s are extra dimensional beings that are above our conventional scientific under standing and are also explainable through the biblical descriptions of Fallen Angels and demons. This may seem far- fetched to many but the authors give evidence both biblical and from filed eye witness testimony to affirm or deny their theory on a case by case basis. They also examine the growing influence of interest in the occult and occult related phenomena related to interest in or following sightings of U.F.O.s. It is an informative book and one that may unsettle a number of people.

Thoughtful look at UFO's from a different viewpoint.

Although this book is well over 20 years old, it has some very interesting information. I first read this book almost 10 years ago and found its explanaiton of the UFO phenom. refreshing. The appendix is filled with scientific information that help one understand the topic presented. If you read this book and keep reminding youself how old it is you can better appreciate it. I wish there were more current books like it. The best recent book like it that I can recommend is "Alien Encounters" by Chuck Missler and Mark Eastman, which I recommend if you are seeking a different view of UFO's.

About the Author

Helmut Wiedemann is Professor Emeritus of Applied Physics and of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. He obtained his PhD from the University of Hamburg in 1971 and worked at DESY before becoming the assistant director of the 18 GeV PEP Storage Ring at SLAC in 1975. In 1980 he became adjunct professor and a full professor of applied physics (photon science) in 1983.

His research interests include developments in theoretical and experimental accelerator physics, particle sources, linear accelerators, storage rings and synchrotron radiation sources, with special interests in developing high brightness light sources at short pulse duration.

Professor Wiedemann is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Great tables of normal/abnormal values and diagnostic criteria (more complete than Otto and Mayo manual). Especially useful for practical echo reporting. The book does assume a basic working knowledge of echocardiography: beginner should use this book in conjunction with the Otto or Mayo text.

Obi Okonkwo, grandson of the protagonist in Things Fall Apart, is the pride of his Nigerian village, Umuofia. The Ibo villagers pooled their money to send one native son off to England to be educated and Obi was chosen. Now he has returned to a prestigious job with the civil service in Lagos--he's the Administrative Assistant to the Inspector of Schools. He bears the burden of his people's expectations but his exposure to Western culture has distanced him from tribal life and though he is now earning a magnificent living by their standards, he has trouble making ends meet as he tries keeping up with the Joneses in the big city. Borrowing money, he ends up "digging a new pit to fill up an old one." Further complicating matters is his love affair with the lovely Clara, an osu, one of the socio-religious outcasts who also figured prominently in Things Fall Apart.
As financial and romantic pressures continue to mount and his beloved mother sickens and dies, Obi must also deal with temptation, offers of money and sex if he will use his position to assist scholarship applicants. For as long as he can, Obi juggles all of these problems, but gradually they come crashing down on him.
More directly than almost any author I'm aware of, Chinua Achebe faces head on the issues which confront the developing nations in a post-Colonial world. In No Longer At Ease, even as he pokes fun at the remaining English bureaucrats and their condescending ways, he honors their tradition of relatively honest civil service. Meanwhile, he questions whether at least this first generation of natives who are replacing the departing Europeans are truly prepared to meet the same standards or whether a slide into corruption is nearly inevitable.
Obi is a decent enough man and he has the best of intentions, but he gets in way over his head, bringing tragedy down upon himself and disgrace to his village. His situation, as portrayed by Achebe--caught between the traditions and expectations of his village on the one hand and the modern ways and legal constraints of the West on the other--puts him in an untenable position, one where something must give. The title of the book comes from T. S. Eliots's The Journey of the Magi :
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death.
Achebe offers a fully realized portrait of one of those returned who are "no longer at ease," aliens in their own country. It's a terrific book.

Achebe shows us how reality contrasts with our ideals.

Achebe's sequel to Things Fall Apart, he seeks to reconcile and give us a further understanding of the struggle between modernism and tradition. He gives us a view of how our ideals contrast with how we really live and exist in reality. The point of this book can be best summed up by Achebe's own words. He states, "The impatient idealist says: 'Give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth.' But such a place does not exist. We all have to stand on the earth itself and go with her at her pace." This book while centered mainly on the African identity crisis, gives a broad understanding of issues of right and wrong and moral consequences of individualism.

OUTSTANDING SEQUEL, VERY SENSITIVE INSIGHTS

No Longer at Ease, in my opinion, is actually a better book than Things Fall Apart. Achebe does a masterful job of depicting the experience of an ex-patriate returning home after many years abroad. Such experience is universal, not confined to Nigeria or the main character Obi Okonkwo (grandson of the main character in Things Fall Apart).
In adition to the ex-pat experience, Achebe inserts the peculiarly Nigerian experience, in which a group of British still retained some of the leadership positions in civil service while native Nigerians were mostly focused on politics. The moral aspect is also noteworthy, as the widely accepted corruption and favouring done by Nigerians in power was not mirrored by the British.
Aside from the socio-historical aspect of the novel, Achebe is very sensitive in showing the downward spiral of young Obi, as he tries to fight against strong unreasonable traditions (such as with his girlfriend who is of a banished caste). Obi gets enmeshed in a vicious cycle in which he needs to show success, to a point in which his salary can longer sustain his lifestyle, which is forced upon him by expectations.
I highly recommend this book, especially to ex-pats of any nation. As an ex-pat returned home myself, I feel many of the same difficulties Obi did. Obi's anguish and pain are crystal clear, and any ex-pat will relate.

The authors begin with the six soldiers' childhoods. Soon enough, bombs have fallen on Pearl Harbor, and by May '43 the young men have become proud leathernecks. Bradley and Powers incorporate accounts of specific battles, like "Hellzapoppin Ridge" (Bougainville, December '43), and pull in corps life and lore, from the tough-minded to the slightly silly, from mandatory penis inspections (medics checking for VD) to life in the pitch-dark of "Tent City No. 1." And they cover the strategy and tactics leading up to the awful battle for the islandAthe navy's disputed plans for offshore bombardment, cut at the last minute from 10 days to three; the 16 miles of Japanese underground tunnels, far more than Allied intelligence expected. A quarter of the book follows the fighting on Iwo Jima, sortie by sortie. The final chapters pursue the veterans' subsequent lives: Bradley and Powers set themselves against often-sanctimonious tradition, retrieving the stories of six more or less troubled individuals from the anonymity of heroic myth. A simple thesis emerges from all the detail worked into this touching group portrait, in a comment by John Bradley: "The heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn't come back." Beneath The Flag

I was only 5 when the attack on Iwo Jima took place. My own father, by virtue of age, good luck and a naval officer's commission escaped conscription into this particular hell. My personal wartime experience is a vague one of watching free movie musicals at the Ottumwa Iowa Naval Air Station, squashing and saving tin cans for the war effort and finally weaving red white and blue crepe paper into the spokes of my junior bike in celebration of VJ day. Thanks to a new book about World War II, I am discovering what it was really like back then to feel true patriotism. It is a bittersweet revelation, but a very valid one.
"Flags of Our Fathers" is a book which appeals not only to the die-hard WWII buff but to any person, male or female, with an interest in a teeth clenching, powerful and poignant story. It describes a horrible battle, the incredible selfless sacrifices of young men and the angst of their families.
James Bradley & Ron Powers have brought to vivid life the real people behind the famous flag-raising mythos, the surreal war in which they so valiantly fought and the survivors' eventual reentry into civilian life. This is an adventure story of true horrific experiences. On the surface it is a "good guy-bad guy" saga in which our good guys finally triumph. The good guys lucky enough to come home are quiet, self effacing and seemingly forever linked to the ghosts of those who did not survive. In an age before psychologists had discovered and mined "survivor's guilt" and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the luckiest of these largely teenaged boys trained, fought, were wounded, came back and resumed living to the best of their ability. I defy any woman not to bleed for the mothers and fathers who waited and any man not to cry for the "uncommon valor" of these very young sons. Bradley's personal experiences with his own hero father, his intimate interviews with families of these sons and his own quiet faith are melded with the poetic prose of Ron Powers into a seamless whole.
This is a meticulously researched, lovingly crafted and stunning battle book, written by exceptional men about exceptional men. It is sure to become a classic.

Real American Heros

Without question this is one of the best battle books of WWII. I think it can be compared with "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose for its depth and the amount of research done by Bradley on the battle and the men who fought there.
I was barely four years old when the famous photo was taken and therefore grew up with the image firmly planted in my mind. What Bradley has done is put face on each of the six men who raised that flag.
At the heart of the story is the savagery of the battle, the courage and sacrafice of the men who fought the battle and the fact that no one questioned why they were there and for what they were fighting. In my mind every man who stepped off a landing craft to fight on the beaches of Iwo Jima was a hero. Unfortunatly, those who came home probably didn't think so and had to fight a different kind of battle which Mr. Bradley describes in detail.
This is a book I found hard to put down. And like the Rosenthal photo, the images created by James Bradley will stay with me.

Amazing read

Easily one of the best books I have read in a while. Mr. Bradley goes above and beyond telling the stories of the flag risers. It is a shame though ths Marines admitted they misidentified the author's father, and he is not one of the flag risers. Either way it is an amazing read and gives a brilliant synopsis of the training and battle of Iwo Jima, and what the men went through mentally both before and after.

Nada mal, pero el precio es muy alto para la calidad

No esta nada mal, pero por el precio esperaba más. Claro tiene mucho merito en ser uno de los pocos en escribir y mucho más por hacerlo fuera de Santo Domingo. No quiere que se interprete que esta mal el libro es que como todo tema de religión que se practica de manera oculta no hay mucha información y la misma cambia de terreiro o casa. Una parte muy positiva es que indica como los Dominicanos, Haitiano y Puertorriqueños sobre las diferenciamos los sances de los misterios. Repito, por el precio espere que abundara sobre los diferentes Luas o Lwas de manera mas individual. También tiene valía la información sobre el espiritismo como practica. Me molesto que se repite muchas veces durante el libro.

Very Basic Info

Very good if you starting off. But if you know just a little bit is not worth the $30 investment. Maybe If it was price at $10 it could be worth it. My 2 cents. At least someone has come forward and write about 21 Divisiones. I'm a babalawo now but I was initiated many years ago in Misterio but never went fully into it. But many things that are written here I already knew still worth it if they bring the price down. I would have given 4 stars if it was repriced lower.
