Good, but with some editorial issues

The book has some editorial issues, but it's still an exhaustive and comprehensive book on the subject of SS7.

The editorial issues appear to be sections that need updating. For instance, portions of the first chapter are very dated, and no longer apply in 2014. For instance, on page 33, the author writes about "PCS" as if it were still the late 1990s. Carriers have now started using their PCS 1900 MHz spectrum for LTE. Also, on page 28, the author writes, "...[there] are many obstacles to supporting Internet access on wireless phones. The bandwidth required to support Web access is not yet available in North America (although Japan and many other countries are already enjoying this level of access)." This was the case as recently as several years ago when we had feature phones with WAP browsers, but no longer applies in 2014 when we have 100 Mbps LTE networks and smart phones and tablets with fully-functional browsers like Chrome and Safari.

If you want to learn SS7, and you're willing to overlook some issues with dated content, then this is still a good book.

Great book for teachers!

Great book for school teachers! It teaches a specific plan of action if a dangerous person "wolf" gets into the school and shows how a class of students practices this in a school drill, like a fire drill. It prepares the children for lock down procedures such as locking the door, staying out of sight, spreading out, grabbing something to throw at the wolf while we run in a zigzag and make strange noises if he should come into the classroom. It might also be good for parents because these are ideas do seem to be useful. I wish there were more books like this out there specifically for parents to go over with their children at home.

Excellent book for kids!

While teaching children crisis response goes back 50 years for fire training, it is new in the field of active shooter and terrorism. Julia's book is a how to train manual for our times. After teaching ALICE for the past several years, the book provided a refreshing take for me and can only improve survival and coping skills in young children. My own seven year old read the book and thought it was great! Teaching things that are potentially scary in a very non-scary way for children has been a hallmark of ALICE training from the start. Julia captures the training in a perfect way for children and makes it easy to understand. This book should be required reading in every K-2 classroom in America...and not only for the kids!

About the Author
Professor Neville Stanton holds a Chair in Human-Centred Design. The Ergonomics Society awarded him the Otto Edholm medal in 2001 for his contribution to basic and applied ergonomics research. He is currently Research Professor at Brunel University, West London, UK. Paul Salmon is a Human Factors researcher and is currently working as a Research Fellow at Monash Unversity Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in Melbourne, Australia. Paul has a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and an MSc in Applied Ergonomics, both from the University of Sunderland in the UK, and is currently studying for a PhD in the area of distributed situation awareness. Dr Guy H. Walker holds a BSc Hons degree in Psychology and a PhD in Human Factors. He has published widely on numerous topics concerned with user centred design and currently works within the DTC HFI consortium at Brunel University, West London, UK. Dr Chris Baber holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology and English from Keele University and a PhD in Speech Technology at Aston University. He is currently Reader in Interactive Systems Design within the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, UK. Dan Jenkins graduated in 2004 from Brunel University with MEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and Design. My Review of this book

The authors "collected" a range of Human Factors (HF) methods that can be used in system design and evaluation/ assessment- but they are not easy to apply in a real life problem !!!

The book can be used as a reference check for professional people.

The book provides very little examples associated with the concepts. Moreover, the examples illustrated in the book are disjointed, they are not easy to follow.

It seems to me that the authors have limited work experience in HF - this is a major issue of this book !!

Finally, the book does not provide practical guidance as the concepts presented in the book are airy-fairy.

Excellent written primer, substandard paperback printing

I came to "Windows Server 2012: Up and Running" via the online version at Safari Books Online (I use it in college). Crisp text, full color illustrations; a great source of information. Then the book arrived. The grays/blacks/whites in the print and illustrations remind me of a so-so copy machine job. Some of the print in the illustrations is simply unreadable. Yes, it could just be my copy but the comments in the (as of 3/24/2013) only other review also mention issues with the type and printing. The previews available (through Google preview) on the publisher's site (O'Reilly) show a full color book.

To be fair to Amazon, if you click on the print version preview on Amazon, it does show black-and-white illustrations. I did not view the print version preview on Amazon prior to purchasing the book because nothing in the description - at least nothing I could see - indicated that the print version would be different from the online version. And, really, I would have been happy with the b/w layout if the illustrations were legible.

The constant distraction of the poor printing is unfortunate. First time author Samara Lynn is clearly enthusiastic about Server 2012 and cares enough to communicate her ideas in a clear, concise style that retains a light, flowing character. Her references to the differences between 2012 and past versions will help uses familiar with the Server family feel at home.

The book is not the be-all, end-all of Server 2012 books and that's why the subtitle is "Up and Running." I used the material to do just that - get up and running in a short time. Active Directory, Hyper-V, User Management, networking, remote access - the basics are covered. Navigating the new GUI access is also covered (I was happy to hear that the author briefly had the same trouble I did - how do I shut this thing down?)

Verdict: Good written introduction to Server 2012 that should be read via the online version (Safari, if you have access) or the Kindle version. I've come to expect more from books carrying the O'Reily imprint. If I had ordered the Kindle version or reviewed the Safari online version, my rating would be 5-stars.

Terrible Screenshots; Better Instructions on Google

O'Reilly has long held a reputation for top-flight technical books. I think it's a bit undeserved, but generally speaking I've been happy with them. This book, however, will have you asking how it made it to press. Because it's a basic, "click this, then that" type of book, it goes without saying that the screenshots that go with the instructions should be clear. What you get instead are black-and-white images that look as if they've been photocopied on a printer needing a toner refresh. Look at the other reviews here, and even the generously forgiving hearts who awarded five stars to this mess give mention to the poor quality of the graphics.

One of my pet peeves about tech books--one that I will not overlook and have written about before--is paying a lot of money for a skinny text with huge diagrams/images/screenshots that take up so many pages like deliberate filler. Not only was that the case here, but the images were nearly unreadable.

Two stars may have been appropriate, but due to the foolish five-star reviewers who do you a disservice, it's a one.

Very Nice

This book is a very good read. Well outlined, obviously very well researched and fun to read. I only wished however, that the illustrations were in color or at least large enough that the options and settings in the diagrams could be seen. It's one thing to read about (for example) Converting GUI to Minimal Server Interface, but not being able to view the diagrams clearly leaves me a bit frustrated. Good as a primer on Server 2012 though.
